Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, is of major commercial importance throughout its NE Atlantic and Mediterranean distribution where it occurs in burrows within muddy sediments. The fact that the species is caught in commercial gear only when it emerges from its burrow and the lack of hard structures available for ageing complicate the application of normal fishery-dependent stock assessment methodologies. This study provides a preliminary investigation into the possibility of using underwater TV surveys as a fishery-independent technique to assess the Nephrops stocks of the Adriatic Sea. The results are compared with previous studies and the advantages and disadvantages of using such methodology are discussed in an Adriatic context.
