ABSTRACT

We list the types of 65 nominal taxa of recent fishes present in the Fish Collection of the Museum of Zoology of the Museo de Ciencias Naturales de la UNELLEZ – Guanare, Portuguesa, Venezuela (abbreviated MCNG, Leviton, et al., 1980). The list includes 35

holotypes and 200 jars of paratypes represented by 65 species and 279 specimens. We also provide photographs of the holotypes and a map indicating the type locality of these. The list of types is presented in alphabetical order. Each species includes the author (s) and year of publication, MCNG catalog number, number and standard? length of the specimens, and a brief description of the type locality type, including latitude and longitude. We also include observations about the conservation status of the specimens and missing lots.
Key Words: Types, holotype, paratype, fishes, ichthyology, museum, MCNG, Venezuela.
INTRODUCTION

The biodiversity of freshwater fishes from Venezuela is very considerably high (Taphorn et al. 1997, Lasso et al 2005), with over 1100 valid species reported. The fish collection of the Museo de Ciencias Naturales Guanare (MCNG) of the Universidad de Los Llanos Occidentales Ezequiel Zamora UNELLEZ), is the largest fish collection in Venezuela and one of the largest in South America. Started in 1978, by Donald C. Taphorn andy Craig Lilyestrom, this collection now has over 56,700 cataloged lots of fishes, (668,416 specimens), with ample coverage of all freshwater habitats of Venezuela, and particularly good coverage of the Apure drainage of the western llanos, and the middle and upper Orinoco (Fig. 1) of Amazonas State. In total, we have about 1965 species of fishes (both freshwater and marine) in the collection.

Holotypes and paratypes are the most important specimens to the science of taxonomy because they represent the specific animals to which we tie scientific names. As such, they are an important part of a country’s national biological heritage, and need special care and protection. For this reason museums publish special lists of these types from time to time (e.g., Böhlke 1984, Sabaj et al 1997) , to inform scientists and governmental agencies of the holdings deposited in natural science museums. As time passes, these types acquire even more value, since many type localities succumb to pollution and development. Because all specimens deteriorate with time, photographs help preserve for future workers, the details of pigmentation which are gradually lost to fading.

UNELLEZ – Guanare, up to the year 2000.

Most of the types in the MCNG have been deposited by ichthyologists working at the museum in Guanare in conjunction with scientists from other countries. They are as such a product of international scientific collaboration. This catalogue of types represents the first contribution of its kind for the MCNG. It was prepared following the recommendations of International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999). We hope the information will be useful for the scientific community and administrative agencies that require this sort of information. Table 1 lists all type material deposited in the MCNG.
FORMAT OF THE LIST
Primary types used here are called the Holotype and secondary types are Paratypes.

Holotype: The single specimen designed or indicated as the type by the original author at the time of the publication of the original description.

Paratype: A specimen other than the holotype which was before the author at the time of preparation of the original description and was so designated or indicated by the original author.

(Definitions according to Mayr 1969)

Information included for each species (when available) in presented as follows:

Genus, species, author (s), year, publication, volume (s), number (s), page (s).

Type status: MCNG catalog number, length(s) Standard length is given for all holotypes. For some lots of paratypes (when this information was included in the original description) the standard length of the smallest and largest specimen in the lot is given. Locality includes the Venezuelan state, and the specific locality, the collector (s), and collection date. Usually geographic names are not translated into English.

Comments: This section includes the current name in usage for the taxon, the physical condition of the preserved specimens, missing specimens, and types that were published but never deposited in MCNG.

For holotypes, a photograph and map indicating the type localities are also included.
