POSITION IDENTIFICATION




TITLE: Library Clerk

DEPARTMENT: Library


REPORTS TO: Library Director

STATUS: Part-time Non-exempt 74 Points

APPROVE BY: Personnel Committee

APPROVAL DATE: 08/15/2001

POSITION SUMMARY


Under general supervision of the Library Director and the Library Technicians the individual performs clerical duties to maintain the daily operation of the library.


  1. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Help library customers find what they need both on site and from other libraries.

    2. Help customers use computer catalog, online databases and Internet.

    3. Help customers use copier, telephone, printers and other library equipment.

    4. Charge and return library materials.

    5. Issue borrower cards and update address databases.

    6. Receive payment and make change.

    7. Conduct basic reference interviews.

    8. Explain and enforce library policies.

    9. Maintain orderly arrangement of library collection, furniture and equipment.

    10. Compile daily statistics.




  1. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Help maintain book/magazine/newspaper/AV/toy inventory.

    2. Help prepare bimonthly bank deposits.

    3. Arrange displays and decorations in the library.

    4. Prepare materials for shipping and assist with shipments.

    5. Help train Library Pages and volunteers.

    6. Participate in continuing education on library topics.

    7. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.




  1. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    1. Ability to arrange and maintain library materials in alphabetic and numerical order.

    2. Knowledge of keyboarding, data entry and online searching.

    3. Ability to deal with public and staff in a friendly manner.

    4. Ability to read.

    5. Ability to respect and maintain customer confidentiality.

    6. Ability to quickly learn and perform new tasks with a minimum of supervision.

    7. Ability to calculate fees and make change.

    8. Ability to travel the length of the library quickly and often during a shift.

    9. Ability to squat, kneel, stoop, stretch and climb to retrieve library materials.

    10. Ability to lift forty pounds.




  1. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    1. High school diploma or GED.

    2. Basic computer skills.

    3. Six months experience working with the public. (One year preferred.)

    4. Prior library experience a plus.
