The Nonvascular Plants
Record total magnification of all drawings.
Record type of section (transverse or longitudinal).
Record genus and species if available.
PLEASE return slides to the proper place in the slide box.
Study Figure 29.5 on page 576 of your textbook. Define the following terms:
alternation of generations:
Mosses: Phylum Bryophyta
Observe the preserved specimens of a moss sporophyte, antheridia, and archegonia. Make a simple sketch of each. Observe the life cycle of a moss on page 581 (Figure 29.8). Find the sporophyte, antheridia, and archegonia in the life cycle. Look up in your glossary and define the terms archegonium and antheridium:
Observe the preserved specimen of Sphagnum (peat moss). Make a simple drawing. Make a simple drawing of a Sphagnum leaf from the prepared slide (Box 108).
Observe the prepared slides of Mnium antheridia and Mnium archegonia (Box 108). Make a simple drawing of each. Locate these stages in the life cycle of mosses found on page 581 of your textbook. Label the archegonia and egg from the archegonia slide, and antheridia and sperm cells from the antheridia slide. Use Page 29 of the Rust manual as an additional reference.
Observe the prepared slides of a moss capsule (Box 109) and a moss protonema (Box 99). For the moss protonema you will have to use a high magnification. Make a simple drawing of each. Label the sporogenous cells that undergo meiosis on your moss capsule drawing. Locate both of these stages in the life cycle of mosses found on page 581 of your textbook. Use Page 28 of the Rust manual as an additional reference.
Define the following terms (Page 580 & 581):
Liverworts: Phylum Hepatophyta
Observe the preserved specimens of Marchantia. Using your textbook, define the term thalloid (page 582). Locate the gemmae cups in the photo on page 582 of your textbook. Gemmae cups are also shown on page 25 of the Rust manual.
From the preserved specimens of Marchantia, make a simple drawing of the gemmae cups (labeled cupules on the specimen). In addition, make a simple drawing of the sporophyte using Figure 29-9 (Page 582) as a reference.
From the preserved specimen of Marchantia polymorpha, make a drawing of the thallus (thalloid).
Observe the following prepared slides:
Marchantia antheridium (Box 109A), Marchantia archegonia (Box 109A), and Marchantia sporophyte (Box 109). Make a drawing of each slide. Use Figure 29.9 (page 582 of your textbook) and Pages 25 & 26 of your Rust manual as a reference. Label the antheridiophore & antheridia on the Marchantia antheridum slide. Label the archegoniophore & archegonia with eggs on the Marchantia archegonia slide. Label the foot, seta, and sporogenous cells that undergo meiosis on the Marchantia sporophyte slide.
Hornworts: Phylum Anthocerophyta
Obtain the l.s. (LONGITUDINAL SECTION) slide of the Anthoceros sporophyte (Box 108). Make a simple drawing labeling the sporogenous cells that undergo meiosis. Compare the slide to the photograph on page 582 of your textbook.
