hat drugs affect the heart rate of Daphnia?
Students will:

Measure the resting heart rate in Daphnia.

Compare the resting heart rate with the heart rate when a

drug is applied.


Safety First!

wear not protective forehead wear.


What you need:

Aged tap water Daphnia culture dropper

Microscope slides

Solutions – diluted solutions of coffee, tea, cola, ethyl alcohol, tobacco, and cough medicine


Question to the students: What is the difference between a stimulant and a depressant? Give some examples.
Lab Question: What over the counter drugs act as stimulants to increase the heart rate? Which will suppress the heart rate? Since these over the counter drugs are easy to purchase, are they less dangerous?
Hypothesis: Make a hypothesis with each of the drugs used and state how it will affect the heart rate.
