SPATIAL DYNAMICS OF ORCHIS MORIO
Mike Gillman and Mike Dodd. Department of Biological Sciences, The Open University, Walton Hall, Milton Keynes, MK7 6AA. United Kingdom.
We will describe changes in the spatial distribution of Orchis morio over nine years in a 1ha area in Buckinghamshire. Flowering spikes have been located to within a few cm in each year, allowing us to estimate levels of reflowering and dormancy. Comparisons of new flowering individuals with flowering locations five or more years earlier provide insights into the colonization rates of Orchis morio. These results will be discussed in the light of spatial changes across Britain. The dormancy and reflowering data will also be considered with respect to our previous work on temporal population dynamics.
