Satpura Bird List

The Satpura Tiger Reserve covers an extremely diverse eco-system which includes sal and teak dominated forests, young Chloraxylon dominated lowland jungle, some meadows, mixed hill forests with bamboo and at the northern end the waters of the Tawa Reservoir provide a constantly changing but extremely rich habitat for migrant waterfowl, charismatic birds of prey like the Osprey and the peregrine falcon. As the cold weather approaches large numbers of waterfowl use the waters of the lake including bar-headed geese, pintail, garganey, pochard and Ruddy shelduck. The following list is reasonably comprehensive although we are sure that more species will continue to be added and consists of birds actually seen or reported. The Satpuras also form one corridor of movement/dispersal for various species between the mountains of the Eastern Himalayas and the Western Ghats and harbour creatures found nowhere else in central India. Thus a walk around Pachmarhi will get you a sighting of the lovely Malabar Whistling Thrush – Salim Alis’ ‘Whistling schoolboy’ and the black crested bulbul or even the Indian Blackbird. And any wooded area could be patrolled by Black Eagles and Mountain Hawk eagles. The Rufous bellied eagle is also reported from here and it is almost certain that late winter will bring sightings of Himalayan Griffon vultures. Nomenclature follows Birds of the Indian Subcontinent by Richard Grimmett, Carol Inskipp & Tim Inskipp 2nd Edition.
