Bigpoint cooperates with Orbster: Bigpoint’s top online game DarkOrbit is now available as an iPhone application
Bigpoint GmbH and Orbster GmbH implement the pilot project “DarkOrbit Ground Forces”
Orbster’s game platform “GPS Mission Pro” offers the DarkOrbit add-on as an application for the iPhone 3G and 3GS
Hamburg, October 22, 2009 – Bigpoint GmbH, the leading provider of browser-based online games (browser games) based in Hamburg, Germany, cooperates with Orbster GmbH which offers location-based games for cell phones with integrated global positioning systems on its game platform “GPS Mission”. Using a GPS cell phone such as the iPhone, these games can be played “outside” in real places just like scavenger hunts or treasure hunts.
The best part about this is that online games such as Bigpoint’s popular space game DarkOrbit can now be played on a cell phone instead of just on a home computer, a laptop or in an Internet cafe. Following the popular geocaching game principle users can now assign virtual goods for their game to real locations using GPS. The location of the valuable items will be shown on the cell phone on a map in “GPS Mission“ and can be collected. They’ll be credited directly to the game account in the online game.
Under the name “DarkOrbit Ground Forces“ the pilot project will be launched in real locations worldwide as an application for the iPhone 3G and 3GS.
DarkOrbit is the world’s first game to demonstrate this innovative concept, which also has the CEO of Bigpoint GmbH Heiko Hubertz very excited: “We’re proud that DarkOrbit is the world’s first MMOG to be extended into reality: Combining online games and GPS applications together opens up a brand-new opportunity for our players to have fun playing games. With Orbster as a reliable and professional partner, the game world of our successful games is becoming even more intertwined with the everyday life of our players. It’s a pilot project which offers a whole lot of potential for the future.“
The application “GPS Mission Pro“ can be used in exchange for a fee of €2.39 ($2.99). DarkOrbit players will also receive “DarkOrbit Ground Forces“ for free via a promo code.
