Thangasseri-which had been a prized possession of the Portuguese, Dutch and British in succession, is a place of historical importance.

A lighthouse built in 1902, 18th century churches and stately ruins of Portuguese and Dutch forts stand here as testimonies to the years of European imperialism.

Sasthamkotta- Photo

Location: About 29 km from Kollam town

This vast fresh water lake surrounded by hills on three sides is the largest of its kind in Kerala.

The ancient Sastha Temple, which lends its name to the town, is an important pilgrim centre.

Palaruvi - literally, stream of milk - is one of Kerala's most picturesque waterfalls, cascading down a height of 300 feet.

It is a favourite picnic spot for visitors from all over south India. The journey to Palaruvi through the dense tropical forest is a spellbinding experience. The surrounding mist-clad blue hills and green valleys form a stunning backdrop to the milk-white burst of foam whose muffled roar echoes through the otherwise tranquil, virgin forest.

The District Tourism Promotion Council conducts regular backwater cruises from the Boat Club in houseboats, luxury boats and speedboats.

Kottukal Rock Cut Cave Temple (11 km from Chadayamangalam): This temple situated on the Thiruvananthapuram - Kottayam MC Road is an idyllic example of rock cut temple architecture.
Jatayupara: A huge rock at Chadayamangalam takes its name from the mythical bird Jatayu in the epic Ramayana, who is believed to have collapsed on the rock after failing in his attempts to thwart Ravana's kidnapping of Sita.
Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary -Photo

Location: 66 km from Kollam town on the Kollam - Shencotta Road, in Pathanapuram taluk


The tropical, evergreen Shenduruny forest, which gets its name from an endemic species of tree called Chenkuruny (Gluta travancoria), was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1984.
Animals like elephants, tigers, leopards, bison, sambar, wild boar, lion-tailed macaques, langurs and deer are seen in the sanctuary, spread over hilly terrain of over 100 sq. km. According to some recent archaeological studies, Shenduruny was the cradle of one of the oldest river valley civilizations in India.
