September Paper

Materials Engineering in the Maritime Industry.

By Yvonne Marie Traynham, P.E., Ph.D.

Associate Professor

Department of Engineering

U. S. Merchant Marine Academy

Abstract:
The maritime environment is very challenging for engineers and naval architects to design and maintain marine structures and engineering operations. The loads experienced by shipboard machinery and ship structures are typically large dynamic fluctuating loads; additionally, the chemical, corrosion, and temperature environment must be taken into consideration. Systems must also be maintainable in isolated working environments with minimum interruption of service. Industry professionals need current detailed knowledge of the selection and performance of the spectrum of engineering materials and their applications for optimum performance.
This presentation consists of an overview of traditional as well as the advanced engineering materials being used in the maritime industry. The Rules for Materials and Welding by the Classification Societies for the selection of materials is outlined as well as required testing methodology for quality control. The effects of heat treatments and other fabrication operations are considered.  The presentation then overviews particular materials engineering issues, to include properties of weldments, high/low temperature environments, failure, fatigue analysis and corrosion considerations in maritime applications.”
