PVI Acquires E Ink http://www.digitaleastasia.com/2009/06/02/pvi-acquires-e-ink/

Posted: June 2nd,2009 | By: Jeff

Prime View International (PVI), a leading small and medium display provider and the world’s highest volume supplier of ePaper display modules, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire E Ink Corporation, the leader in electronic paper display materials and intellectual property for approximately $215 million.  If you are not already familiar with these companies, you will soon.  This deal consolidates two of the major players at the intersection of Web 2.0, eBooks and the green technology phenomenon.  In the future, the business drivers will come from consumers who want to read eBooks and the corporate and government sector as it move away from paper and towards electronic records.

The ePaper display module market will grow to over $3 billion by 2013. This market will see further growth with the emergence of color displays and flexible displays, serving eBook/eTextbook, eNewspaper/eMagazine and eDocument markets. Currently, electrophoretic display technology has more than 90% market share in the overall ePaper displays, and E Ink is the #1 supplier of electrophoretic materials,” according Dr. Jennifer Colegrove, DisplaySearch’s Director of Display Technologies.

The market for electronic book devices such as the SONY Reader and Amazon Kindle is forecasted to grow from 1.1 million units in 2008 to 20 million units in 2012, a cumulative annual growth rate of 105% over the four-year period,” said iSuppli analyst Vinita Jakhanwal, “PVI and E Ink enabled this market back in 2005 and they have been the display market leaders ever since.”

The world is searching for green technology that saves energy and cuts waste and still provides an outstanding experience,” said Scott Liu, Chairman and CEO of PVI, “E Ink’s electronic paper meets those needs, especially in electronic publishing and mobile displays. The people in both companies will unite to provide the world’s best digital reading experience and that will benefit all our customers and end users.”  Read the company’s press release.

E Ink and PVI together support 20 eBook manufacturers.  This technology is also used for cellphones, signage, smartcards, memory devices and battery indicators.  In the past twelve months customers have announced many exciting E Ink-enabled devices.

Hanvon N510 eBook (ebookweek.com)

•  Oprah Winfrey endorsed Amazon’s Kindle (Video: Kindle) on live television calling it “her favorite gadget”. Subsequently Amazon’s Kindle 2 has proven highly popular and the Kindle DX enters the eTextbook and eNewspaper space with a large 9.7” screen.

•  SONY launched a new
PRS-700 Reader with integrated touch screen.
•  Chinese astronauts brought the Hanwan N510 eBook into outer space on a recent Shenzhou 7 mission.
•  PVI, Epson, LG Display, PolymerVision, Hewlett-Packard and Plastic Logic demonstrated flexible active matrix displays using E Ink Vizplex imaging film.
•  E Ink Corporation teamed with Esquire Magazine and Ford Corporation on the first ePaper animated magazine cover.
•  In May 2009, Verizon announced the Samsung Alias 2 cellphone, with a changeable keypad made with E Ink Vizplex imaging film.

The New York Times is reporting that Google is “at the annual BookExpo convention in New York over the weekend, Google signaled its intent to introduce a program by that would enable publishers to sell digital versions of their newest books direct to consumers through Google. The move would pit Google against Amazon.com which is seeking to control the e-book market with the versions it sells for its Kindle reading device.”

If Google enters the eBook market, be sure to keep your eyes on PVI.

Prime View International (PVI), a leading display maker, announces that it plans to acquire e-paper manufacturer E Ink for $ 125. Earlier the companies had joined hands to create displays for Sony Reader and Amazon.com's Kindle e-book readers. PVI produces displays for various digital devices such as cameras, TVs and GPS systems. The company owns a e-paper unit and is a leading provider of flexible display panels. E Ink makes digital ink technology for cell phones, e-readers, and other portable devices.

PVI is already works with E Ink. PVI is E Inks biggets customers after it switched from LCDs to electronic ink for its display panels. The electronic ink offers higher resolution and consumers less power than the traditional LCD panels .

With the merger, the companies would be able to have a better grab over the growing e-reader market.

According to Russ Wilcox, E Ink's co-founder, president, and CEO,

Combining E Ink and PVI creates a single public company that is dedicated to electronic paper

Further, he added that the common ownership structure will get them closer to customers around the world, streamline the supply chain, and speed up new product development.

E Ink has been sustaining with investments from other companies like Intel, Motorola, and Philips. The acquisition by PVI would make E Ink a wholly owned subsidiary of the company. E Ink would be keeping its headquarters and staff in Cambridge and accelerate its research and development on e-paper and expand its capacity.

Still what remains to be discussed is that PVI's plans for acquisition would come true, only if it is approved by shareholders of both the companies.
