Klug, Old Activity 2.1, Mitosis and the Cell Cycle becomes

Klug, NEW Activity 2.1, Parts of the Cell

Klug, NEW Activity 2.2, Mitosis and the Cell Cycle

Klug, NEW Activity 2.3, Cell Cycle Regulation

* In its revised format, Parts 2.1.1—Introduction, 2.1.4—Cell Cycle Introduction, 2.1.5—Prophase, 2.1.6—Prometaphase, 2.1.7—Metaphase, 2.1.8—Anaphase, and 2.1.9—Telophase should be separated from the original tutorial then combined to form this new tutorial, Activity 2.2. It will have it's own Introduction, Summary, and Post-quiz.

* Remove the screen asking if the user wishes to take the quiz.

New organization:

Activity 2.2, Mitosis and the Cell Cycle (old Parts 2.1.1 and 2.1.4-9)

Introduction (Part 2.1.1)

-Use the image and text that are in Part 2.1.1. Change the title over the image to "Mitosis."

-Delete the last 2 sentences from the old narrative: "In this module…" and "Click the 'Play' button below to begin."

Animation (merge Parts 2.1.4 through 2.1.9)

-Merge Parts 2.1.4 through 2.1.9 into one continuous animation by removing all stops.

-Remove all text from the narrative that indicates a "Click" or that tells the user to press "Play" while viewing the animtion.

-Add the following scroll-bar flags: Interphase, Prophase, Pormetaphase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase.

-Remove the action that reveals the photo labels when the user clicks on the "+" or "-" on the picture. This action should be replaced with a simple roll-over action that reveals the labels. The text narrative that explains the "+" and "-" should also be removed.

-Remove the following text from the last screen of the narrative in Part 2.1.4 that reads "We shall return to the cell cycle and its regulation shortly, but…" and replace it with: "Let us examine the different stages that make up mitosis, the cell-division part of the cell cycle. These are illustrated on the left and are termed prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase."

Summary (item 2 through 4 from Part 2.1.16, Module Summary)

Post-quiz (Part 2.1.11 in old format)

-This will not be programmed as part of the Flash animation.

Delete Part 2.1.10. It is not necessary.
Andy’s Comments 9/18:

*The brown text that pops in near the end of Metaphase should not overlap the scrolling narration part of the window. Convert this text to the scrolling narrative.

Andy’s Coments 9/30:

* The brown text in the graphic field still overlaps the text scrolling area.

Andy’s Comments 10/3/03

* The caption to the photograph NOW overlaps the text window. There should be NO overlap of the scrolling text space. This problem could be easily solved by adding the brown text to the scrolling text narrative then sliding the photograph and its caption to the left.

Eric’s Second Pass Comments 10/9/03

  1. Make this tutorial fill the whole browser window and scalable

[Andy 10/30: This will be addressed during assembly.]

  1. Andy, are you comfortable with GO, G1, G2 instead of G0, G1, G2 (the way I learned it) in the figures and text?

[Andy 10/30: The book uses G0, G1, and G2. No change required.]

  1. Please italicize the word Haemanthus in the text that begins “The image at the lower left shows a cell…” which is the third text sequence of the animation.

[Andy 10/30: Make this change.]

  1. In moving from the “The image at the lower left….” text sequence to the “Let us examine the different stages….” sequence, the image changes from a small cell cycle + photo to one big cell cycle. This graphical transition is bumpy as it appears to be an animated transition with a single intermediate frame. It comes across as a dissolve with a flash frame. I’d remove this intermediate frame where the cell cycle is enlarging and moving half way down the screen. Keep the dissolve.

[Andy 10/30: No change required.]

  1. Make the transition from the Interphase sequence to the Prophase sequence (right at Prophase scroll flag) a dissolve, not a hard cut.

[Andy 10/30: No change required.]

  1. Late in the Prophase sequence, when there is a transition to the text “Late in prophase, as the chromosomes….”, the labels and scrolling text come up very suddenly. Change this transition to a dissolve, both for the labels and for the scrolling text.

[Andy 10/30: Make this change.]

  1. During the scrolling of the text “Late in prophase, as the chromosomes…” towards the end of the Prophase sequence, a photo with the caption “Prophase in a cell of the flower…” comes up very suddenly. Fade this in.

[Andy 10/30: Make this change.]

  1. There is another abrupt transition in the middle of the Prometaphase sequence where the text “The spindle fibers now penetrate…” has just begun to scroll labels and a photo of chromosomes suddenly pop up. Make these appearances fade in. When these same labels and photo/caption leave, they should fade out, not abruptly disappear.

[Andy 10/30: Make this change.]

  1. Make the transition from Prometaphase to Metaphase (at the Metaphase scroll flag) a dissolve of graphics and text, not a sudden cut.

[Andy 10/30: Make this change. Also, the Prometaphase cell jumps from where it was before the flag to where it is after the flag. Please align the graphics so they don’t jump around.]

  1. Late in the Metaphase sequence, an electron microscope photo enlarges out of an inset enlargement of the kinetechore region. This photo isn’t onscreen long enough for me. Can we add another 2 seconds pause after this photo comes up before it zooms back down?

[Andy 10/30: Make this change.]

  1. Make the transition from Metaphase to Anaphase (at the Anaphase scroll flag) a dissolve of graphics and text, not a sudden cut.

[Andy 10/30: Make this change.]

  1. The photo and caption that appears in the Anaphase sequence should fade in, not pop in, and fade out too when it’s time for them to go.

[Andy 10/30: Make this change.]

  1. Make the transition from Anaphase to Telophase (at the Telophase scroll flag) a dissolve of graphics and text, not a sudden cut.

[Andy 10/30: Make this change.]

  1. The photo and caption that appears in the Telophase sequence should fade in, not pop in, and fade out too when it’s time for them to go. The first unit of text should fade out and the new scrolling should fade in.

[Andy 10/30: Make this change.]

  1. A transition in the middle of the Telophase sequence in going to the picture and text of the green plant cell should be a dissolve, not an abrupt transition. The photo that appears in the Telophase plant sequence should also fade in.

[Andy 10/30: Hard fades are fine for the change between animal and plant Telophase and back..]

  1. The word Haemanthus in the plant Telophase sequence (caption and text) should be italicized.

[Andy 10/30: Make this change.]
