Key overview of syrphidae for Slovenia

Introduction

This overview tries to compile existing keys to identify all Syrphidae of Slovenia. Because the most recent list of Syrphidae of Slovenia (de Groot & Govedič 2008) is far from complete, I list all species from Central Europe and Balkan countries. Also species with uncertain distribution are taken into account. The distribution of species is from the species accounts of Speight et al. (2005).

A total of 482 species is considered as possible occuring in Slovenia. From them 398 species can be identified with Van Veen (2004. Three genera, Rohdendorfia, Spazigaster, and Syrphocheilosia can not be identified with Van Veen (2004) and alternative keys should be used to key out these genera like Thompson and Rotheray (1998).

Some genera have a lot of species which are not in van Veen (2004). Especially genera like Cheilosia, Eumerus, Merodon and Pipiza are difficult to be determined because their status mostly unknown or there are no comprehensive existing keys. Behind these species you will find the alternative keys or descriptions of the species so identification is still possible.
