Forest Lawn Cemetery aka Buffalo City Cemetery, Buffalo, N.Y.
The Western New York Genealogical Society, through a bequest from June Partridge Zintz, is pleased to make available to the public the records of Buffalo’s Forest Lawn Cemetery. Please use this guide to make your research much easier, and reduce unnecessary wear to our films.
The Forest Lawn records fall into two categories: the Death Registers, and the Lot Registers.
The Death Registers begin about 11 September 1853 and run through 1998. Each death was recorded in chronological order. They were not alphabetized, but were sorted by the first letter of each surname. So, to find the death record of John Smith some time after the Civil War, one would turn to the death register covering the period 1865 to 1875, find the “S” section in that register, and scan through it until his name is found.
You will find a great deal of information on each individual, but take special note of the Section and Lot on which he was buried. That will provide the key to a lot on which other members of his family may be buried unless he was buried in a single grave.
The Death Registers, the years covered by each, and the film number on which each are to be found are as follows:
Death Registers

Register A: c11 Sept. 1853 - July 1868

Divided into sections for each letter of the alphabet; list of removals from North St Cemetery in 1901 are added to the end of every section of the alphabet and also inserted into the register by death date.

Duplicated in the next volume from Jan.1865 onwards.

“List of persons in Death Register that do not appear in Section Books”

Register B: April 1865 - 30 Sept. 1875

“Parts of the records in this volume from 1865 to 1868 also shown in Volume A.” List of removals from North Street Cemetery added to end of each section of the alphabet and also inserted into register by death date.

Register C: Oct. 1875 - 15 April 1886

List of removals from North Street Cemetery added to end of each section of the alphabet and also inserted into register by death date.

Register D: 15 April 1886 - 6 April 1894

List of removals from North Street Cemetery added to end of each section of the alphabet and into register by death date.

The Lot Registers contain the name of each lot owner, the names and dates of all burials on that lot, and a diagram showing where each individual is buried on the lot. The Lots are designated by letters A through Y, AA through FF, and numbers 1 through 42 in these records. (Some single grave sections and a number of the most recent sections have not been filmed.)
The appropriate Section and Lot designations obtained from the Death Register can be found in the Lot Register. Note the names and dates of all others buried on the lot and also the position of each burial. You will then be able to find the rest of the family in the Death Registers to obtain more information on them, and the position of the burials will help you determine the relationships between the individuals on the lot. (Spouses are most often buried next to each other, smaller coffins generally indicate children, etc.)
[Some of these will appear to be out of order, but the original registers contained several sections each, some of them out of order; they are listed as they appear on the microfilm.]

Special Notes on Other Cemeteries in these Films:
These films also contain records from several other no longer existing Buffalo cemeteries, the so-called North Street Cemetery, the High Street Cemetery, and the Delaware and North Street Cemetery.
The North Street Cemetery was removed by the city in 1901 in order to make room for the new Armory and the present City Honors High School. The bodies were transferred to Forest Lawn, Prospect Lawn in Hamburg, Buffalo Cemetery at Pine Hill, etc. Previous to that date, bodies had been removed from time to time and reburied by their families elsewhere. The removals to Forest Lawn are recorded in several places in these records. They were recorded in the Death Registers at the time that they were moved, they were added to the earlier Death Registers depending on the year of death for each body removed, and they were added to the Lot Records when buried on family lots. The additions in the earlier Death Registers are a little difficult to read, so it is suggested that the Death Register during the period of removal be checked.
Delaware & North Street Cemetery ML897
The Delaware and North St. Cemetery was a private venture begun on 1 January 1854 by the future founder of Forest Lawn. It appears to have failed at the end of 1856. The surviving records do not contain the names of any burials, but list the lot owners. These purchases are mostly marked “B.C.C.” (Buffalo City Cemetery, the corporate name for Forest Lawn) which indicates that their ownership was transferred to lots in the newer cemetery.
High Street Cemetery ML897
The High Street Cemetery was another failed venture. The surviving records contain no burial records. They cover the period of 1866-72 and 1881, and include the name of the owner, the lot number, and date of purchase. It is assumed that these too were transferred to lots in Forest Lawn.
