Centre for Initiatives in Education

Position Description

Peer mentors are former ESP/AESP students who will work closely with a small group of ESP/AESP students in a first-year seminar class, providing them with support and encouragement during their first year. Mentors will meet students regularly with the aim of creating a sense of community in the program, identifying needs and organizing the necessary resources to help students explore and achieve their goals. Mentors will support learning in first-year seminar classes and act as classroom resources.


  • Developing and participating in ESP/AESP orientation to welcome new students.

  • Attending assigned seminar classes and communicating regularly with course instructors to establish the mentor’s role in the classroom. Meeting with students one-on-one.

  • Organizing and leading meetings and events to address the needs of their group.

  • Supporting ESP/AESP students as they develop skills and strategies to attain academic goals.

  • Taking part in on-going training and strategy meetings.

  • Contributing regularly to Mentor cuLearn site.

  • Meeting regularly and maintaining effective communication with Mentor Coordinator and Administrator.


  • Good academic standing: minimum overall GPA of 6.0 (C+) or higher

  • Enrolled as a full-time student at Carleton University

  • Able to collaborate and work effectively as part of a team.

  • Excellent listening and communication skills.

  • Interested in helping others.

  • Interested in developing leadership skills.

  • Attend training and orientation sessions on Aug. 31st & Sept. 1st, 2015.

Related Experience

  • Community involvement through volunteer experience.

  • Experience working as part of a team.

  • Experience with non-profit groups or student government.


6 hours/week during the academic year, excluding exam period.


$13.25/hour, including time spent in pre-service & weekly training.
