Gagea nigra: Translation of the Chinese description of Gagea nigra L.Z. Shue, 1980. Fl. Reipubl. Popul. Sin. 14: 282, 68, Pl. 16, Fig. 4--6 [sect. Minimae (Pascher) Davlianidze]
Plant 4--6 cm tall, [vegetative] bulb egg-shaped, 4--6 mm in diameter, tunic brown to nearly black, cartilaginous, inside with one to a few smaller, narrowly egg-shaped bulbils. Peduncle at base more or less violet, glabrous. Basal leaf one, lanceolate, 5--9 cm long, 1.5--3 mm wide, upper section flat and broad, lower and middle sections with a dorsal keel. Leaves of inflorescence shorter or slightly longer than the inflorescence, 2--5 mm wide, sometimes sparsely hairy at the base, smaller leaves soft villose. Usually 2--5 flowers blooming simultaneously, forming an umbrella-like inflorescence; sometimes only one or more than five flowers developed. Pedicels sparsely villose; [flowers with] lanceolate to ovoid-elliptical perianth leaves, these 6--9 mm long and 1.5--2 mm wide, upper side yellow, lower side pale greenish yellow; lower part of the outer side sparsely and soft villous. Ovary ovoid-cylindrical, style [at flowering time] three to four times longer than ovary, stigma capitate, not clavate, capsule triangular, inverse egg-shaped, comprising one fourth to one third of perianth length. Seeds dull brown, elongate to ovoid.

Flowering time end of March to beginning of April, Fruiting at mid April. Described from Urumqi, inhabiting mountain foot hills ("Bel" rubble vans) and lower mountains, [but also] at alpine meadows and on mountain slopes, 600--1,200 m elevation.

Addenda (given in Chinese and Latin): Similar to G. sacculifera Regel, but in contrast to this species villose; base of the perianth leaves flat, not sacculate, dorsal side of the perianth leaves soft and sparsely villose.
