Horror Tales' debut issue is a decent one. Screams in the Night is one of a handful of Nazi-themed stories by Ajax (as well as one of the handful of Hitler stories produced by pre-code publishers. Satan's Plaything features another of my favorite themes - killer toys. In The Crawling horrors, the Quetzalcoatl's name is misspelled, but a bigger mistake is that the Aztec god is found in a Mayan temple (such mistakes could often be found in Ajax stories). This might be a good time to mention Eerie's writing. One of the most commonly asked questions about Eerie Publications is "Who wrote this stuff?" If the question is who at Eerie wrote this stuff the answer, basically, is "no one" since the scripts were all penned by pre-code authors (though someone at Eerie made minor changes to them). The many who have disparaged Eerie's writing would likely be shocked to find out that it is actually pre-code horror writing at which they are casting their aspersions. The one thing that Eerie staff did write were the story descriptions in the table of contents and here I must agree with the critics. The writing here was abysmal, filled with misspellings and bad grammar. Even worse, the descriptions often told you nothing about the story they were supposed to be describing. An example from this issue should suffice: "A bone cracking weirdie of torture and torment told to the sound of laughter!.....Yeech!" I'll leave it to you to guess which story that accompanied.

  9. Werewolf - Reprint of Little Red Riding Hood and the Werewolf, Weird v1n10 with new splash panel

This issue features a pair of departures for Eerie that give a taste of what is to come the following month. The Thing in the Cellar is perhaps the most significant Eerie story yet. Why? First, it is the first story since the debut story in the first issue of Weird that features new art. Even more significantly, it features art a new Eerie artist - veteran Atlas/Marvel inker Chic Stone (it is possible, if unlikely, that Stone did touch up work on reprinted material at Eerie prior to this). The third interesting thing about the story is that it is one of only four stories that Eerie printed that is did not come from a pre-code source (i.e. not a rework of a pre-code story). The story, however, is not entirely original. It first appeared as a one page-story (with the same title) in the June 1962 issue of Boy Illustrated, a boy's magazine published by Stone (and Warren Spahn?) during his foray into magazine publishing. The magazine featured various "sick jokes, outlaws, sports, comics", puzzles, contests, and features aimed at young boys. It folded after just two issues.

Also interesting is that three of the four stories that did not originate from pre-code sources were penned by Stone, leaving one to wonder if he insisted on doing his own material here. Also unusual is The Bloody Stream, which appears to be a straight reprint of The One that Got Away, making it one of only two non-Ajax stories I have found that Eerie just reprinted (as opposed to reworking with new art).
