Terror Tales was the first of four new titles that would appear in 1969. Horror Tales would debut in June followed by Witches Tales and Tales From the Tomb in July, bringing the total number of titles to 6. Nightmare Merchant is the standout tale here, though Frigid Fear has its moments. On The Claw's Eerie website, a quote from Dave O'Dell (via Terry Beatty) indicates that Chic Stone did the cover for this issue, along with "the first issue" of Tales From the Tomb "Vol. 1 No. 8" , Weird v3n2, Weird v3n3, Terror Tales v1n8, and Terror Tales v1n9, but I question this information. Aside from the fact that there is no Tales From the Tomb v1n8 (he probably meant v1n6), the cover of Terror Tales v1n9 is signed by "Ander". A 2006 post by one "Creepy46" on the Collector's Society message boards also indicates Stone as the cover artist but I don't know If this is Dave O'Dell or not.

Dave O'Dell claims that Chic stone did the cover for this issue (see comment on Terror Tales v1n8).

Reprint of The Golden Ghouls, Voodoo #1 (Ajax, May 1952)
An obituary writer investigates a funeral home where business seems to be going a little too well.

Once again, the version of Phantom Express here is sort of half way between the code-approved version and the pre-code version. A number of additions were made including, in one panel, adding back in a version of the skeleton that had been removed for the code-approved version (the fact that the skeleton added wasn't the same as the original lends further credence to the idea that Ajax/Farrell altered there original artwork when creating the code-approved versions). Dream of Death omits two pages from the original version. The Unseen Terror is the only instance I've found so far of Eerie reprinting an Ajax/Farrell story that did not come from one of their horror titles.

Dave O'Dell claims that Chic stone did the cover for this issue (see comment on Terror Tales v1n8).

Vampire Flies is one of the best examples of Larry Woromay's warped style. After working for Atlas in the 1950s, Woromay got back into comics after long break in the late 1960s working for Charlton and doing a single story for Warren before coming to Eerie Publications in 1969. He only worked at Eerie until 1971 but was probably the most prolific of the American artists.

Steven Sennitt praised the artist of Skull in a Box as the "unknown genius" of Eerie. Eerie underwent some major changes in 1975. After their February issues, Eerie suddenly stopped publishing their horror titles. This was likely due to a collapse in the horror comic magazine market as a whole. Skywald, Marvel, and Atlas/Seaboard all stopped publishing in 1975 (though Warren continued). Some blame this on the market being saturated due to the glut of horror magazines released by Marvel. For a while, it must have looked as if Eerie had bitten the dust as well, but 14 months later, in June of 1976, they were back. But things were very different. Eerie had pared back production considerably. The number of titles was cut back to just three with Tales From the Tomb, Tales of Voodoo, and Witches Tales all being dropped. The three titles that did remain were cut from bi-monthly to quarterly. Page count increased from 52 to 68 pages but price increased substantially from $0.75 to $1.25 ((except for Horror Tales, which went to 116 page issues and a price of $2,00). There were also massive changes in personnel. The masthead for this issue (the only post-1975 issue to include one) lists Myron Fass and Stanley Harris as publishers, Irving Fass as "executive director", Roy Mosny as editorial director, and Robert Califf and Roger V. Marshall as copy editors. Gone are Carl Burgos and Ezra Jackson. The layout of the table of contents also changes and the story synopses now seem more descriptive of the actual story contents. While the format of the post-1975 issues may have been new the stories weren't. While this issue appears to feature three new stories (though they may have been reprinted from one of the few pre-1976 issues I don't have) and (relatively) new artists Martha Barnes and Kato, subsequent issues would feature entirely reprinted material.
