DATES OF INVESTIGATIONS.
For each of the congressional investigations documented in DWG (chapter 2), here are the dates on which NYT front-page stories generated NYT index entries that contained relevant references.
I did this data documentation in April 2003. That is because somebody asked me then to supply the dates underpinning each investigation. To do that, I had to go back to my old handwritten coding sheets containing the relevant information. Here, I include information also on four investigations I have coded for since 1990 (the closing date of the original edition of DWG). That brings the series through calendar 2000. Covered here, then, are 35 investigations conducted between January 1947 and December 2000 that met the criteria discussed in DWG. For the 35, the days with relevant front-page stories add up to 1819. In going through the coding sheets this time, I hit some cases where my new day counts for investigations didn’t match my day counts for those same investigations originally. The new figures here should be considered more accurate. Five investigations went up or down by one, one went up by four. Two of the exceptionally high-count ones fell by eleven and nine, chiefly because of various doublecounting errors I made originally. The McCarthy investigation of 1953-54 fell from 203 to 192, the Iran-Contra investigation of 1987 fell from 95 to 86. None of these revisions causes trouble for the original analysis in DWG.
