Job Related Experience with Sirenia Project
-- Serves as the coordinator for the capture of free-ranging manatees for radio tagging and assessment of body condition. Uses satellite, VHF, and sonic technologies to track radio-tagged manatees by vehicle, boat, or aircraft in various parts of the Southeastern U.S. and elsewhere as required. Records detailed information on movements, behavior, and habitat use in an organized manner. Supervises and instructs federal and state biologists, contract employees, graduate students, and volunteers on research techniques and proper use of technical support equipment. This is an integral part of the Florida Manatee Recovery Plan and requires coordination with other Federal and State managers, oceanaria personnel, academia, conservation groups, and private interests.
-- Conducts field research on the life history of manatees throughout Florida and elsewhere as required, which includes photo-documentation, collection of biological samples, and recording observational data on individually recognizable manatees, primarily in the winter. Field data are collected using both surface and underwater equipment from land, from boats, and while snorkeling. Summarizes data and writes reports based on this research.
-- Provides expertise to Department of the Interior personnel and representatives of other State and Federal agencies on technical matters regarding mortality, radio tracking, and natural history of manatees. Actively participates in a variety of field activities and relevant meetings, and assists the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, Marine Mammal Commission, U.S. Navy, Florida and Georgia state agencies, and other researchers with technical consultation.
-- Serves as the coordinator for the Project’s long-term manatee genetics research. Incumbent is responsible for the application of field studies, collection of samples, compilation of associated ancillary data sets, and assists with development of progress reports and publications. The results of this research are an integral part of the multi-agency Florida Manatee Recovery Plan and require coordination and cooperation with numerous Federal, State, university, and oceanaria researchers. Data gathered from genetic studies will aid biologists and managers in developing population models to better understand manatee recovery efforts.
-- Serves on the Captive Manatee Interagency/Oceanaria Working Group, advising the Manatee Recovery Team on scientific issues related to the re-introduction of captive manatees.
-- Serves as scientific advisor on three University of Florida graduate student committees. Assists in the design, implementation, and supervision of doctoral studies related to genetics, reproduction, and anatomy.
-- Promotes contacts with other federal and state agencies, the media, and private enterprise for the purpose of highlighting the research of the USGS.
-- Serves as Chair of the Aquatic Mammal Section of the International Union for Conservation of Nature/Species Survival Commission's Re-introduction Specialist Group. Advises the international directorate of the IUCN/SSC on re-introduction issues, policies, guidelines, action plans, and monographs for marine mammal species worldwide.
-- Serves as consultant and advisor on the development and implementation of manatee distribution studies and radio tracking projects in foreign countries, specifically Belize, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Jamaica.
-- Serves as Large Whale Necropsy Team Leader for the National Marine Fisheries Service, Southeastern U.S. Stranding Network, and as Project authority on marine mammal strandings. Leads the necropsy group and directs volunteers in implementing appropriate field necropsy, collection and curatorial procedures for marine mammal specimens, identification of incoming specimens, accessioning and cataloging new material, and supervises the care and cleaning of specimens. Incumbent also maintains records on incoming and outgoing materials, selects and invoices materials for loans to other institutions and agencies, and maintains and updates current specimen holdings. Provides expertise and technical advice on marine mammal strandings to federal and state biologists.
-- Organizes and maintains files of manatee survey and tracking data and supervises entry of data into computer files using microcomputer technology, associated software, and appropriate protocols. Advises other research personnel on use of this methodology.
-- Installs hardware and other computer components, including network cabling and peripheral component connections, for all station personnel. Ensures compatibility of all workstations with existing computer peripherals. Acts as consultant for all Project staff in operation and trouble shooting of station microcomputer and software application problems.
-- Curates biological samples obtained through marine mammal and previous manatee salvage efforts, and supervises the identification, care, and cleaning of incoming specimens. Prepares reports and publications based on studies of this material.
-- Provides peer review of scientific manuscripts, reports, proposals, and other materials. Prepares and collaborates with other scientists in the publication and reporting of research efforts. Guest lectures at the University of Florida, Department of Zoology and College of Veterinary Medicine, upon invitation.
-- During last 31 years has flown over 38,000 miles of manatee aerial surveys in Florida and has done distribution surveys in Puerto Rico, Panama, Mexico and Belize.
