Objectives

Research

  • Develop a cyberinfrastructure to allow virtual geological mapping with Semantic Web tech.

  • Develop an internationally recognized and funded research program in geoinformatics by building the following:

    • Geosciences Linked Data Cloud with the Semantic Web Technologies

    • Knowledge base for brittle deformation in the San Andreas Fault zone in California

    • Object/process ontologies for brittle and ductile deformation in structural geology

    • Ontologies for tectonic processes along shear zones and subduction zones

  • Increase the level/frequency of funding for my research projects by government and nongovernment agencies

Teaching

  • Build a semantic web-based digital, field, and virtual geological mapping system

  • Develop a system to allow inclusion of students with mobility impairment in the Field Camp

  • Advance digital mapping in the Summer Field Geology courses with Linked Data technology

  • Train a new, hybrid generation of graduate students in geoinformatics by offering new courses in Earth science informatics in the Department of Geosciences, GSU

    • I started offering the “Geoinformatics” course in the Fall semester of 2010

  • Improve the quality of my teaching by introducing new knowledge in my course material
