Comments:

(1) Four species of Medicago L. (1753), Sp. Pl. 778, is reported from arctic sites but there are no indications that any of them are stable anywhere: M. lupulina L. (1753), Sp. Pl. 779, from RUS, SIB, RFE, ALA, and GRL; M. polymorpha L. (1753), Sp. Pl. 779, from NOR (Svalbard 1928); M. falcata L. (1753), Sp. Pl. 778 (or M. sativa L. subsp. falcata (L.) Arcang. (1882), Comp. Fl. Ital. 160, from SIB; and M. sativa L. (1753), Sp. Pl. 778, from RFE and CAN. The genus should be excluded. (Elven)

60.1  Lupinus L. (1753), Sp. Pl. 721.
60.1.1  Lupinus arcticus S. Wats. (1873), Proc. Amer. Acad. 8: 526.

60.2  Melilotus Mill. (1754), Gard. Dict. Abr., ed. 4, 2.

Comments:

(1) One species possibly stable in the Arctic. Two others most probably as casuals only and these should be excluded: M. officinalis (L.) Lam. (1779), Fl. Franc. 2: 594 [FE: (L.) Pall. (1776), Reise 3: 537], basionym: Trifolium officinale L. (1753), Sp. Pl. 765, from CAN; and M. suaveolens Ledeb. (1824), Ind. Sem. Hort. Dorpat, Suppl. 5, from RFE. (Elven)
60.2.1  Melilotus albus Medikus (1787), Vorl. Churpf. Phys. Ökon. Ges. 2: 382.

S

2n= 16 (2x).

G ALA*? CAN**

Comments:

(1) Possibly stable in arctic Alaska at least, follows the Haul Road north into Brooks Range. (Elven)

60.3  Trifolium L. (1753), Sp. Pl. 764.

Comments:

(1) This genus is fairly heteogeneous and some authors split it. Even if the relevant synonyms do not appear (yet) in our reference works, I propose that we accept Yurtsev's inclusions of them. (Elven)

(2) In LE there is an old collection (1909 year) of the West American species T. cyathiferum Lindl. from the vicinity of the Anadyr town, introduced in the beginning of this century, but not naturalized. (Yurtsev)

(3) It is obviously not acceptable in the checklist; see also next comment. (Elven)

(3) Four other of the species included in Yurtsev's draft seem to be only casual in the Arctic and should be omitted from the final version: T. arvense L. (1753), Sp. Pl. 769, from RUS; T. hybridum L. (1753), Sp. Pl. 766 (Amoria hybrida (L.) C. Presl (1831), Symb. Bot. 1: 47), from ALA, CAN, and GRL; T. spadiceum L. (1755), Fl. Suec., ed. 2, 261 (Chrysaspis spadicea (L.) Greene (1827), Fl. Anjou 205), from several places in RUS; and T. variegatum Nutt. in Torrey & A. Gray (1838), Fl. N. Amer. 1: 317, from ALA. (Elven)

60.3.1  Trifolium lupinaster L. (1753), Sp. Pl. 766.

S Lupinaster pentaphyllus Moench (1802), Suppl. Method. 50.

2n= 32 (4x).

2nD Löve & Löve (1975) list three counts, one Russian as arctic.

Comments:

(1) Probably native in arctic NW Europe and a stable alien in Greenland; elsewhere most probably only as a casual. (Elven)
