Gypsophila spp., Perennial Baby’s Breath

  • Description: Perennial usually grown for its dainty panicles of white flowers.

  • Origin: Europe and Northern Asia.

  • Height x width: G. paniculata grows 2 to 3 feet tall. G. repens is 4 to 8 inches tall.

  • Growth habit: Upright.

  • Foliage: Opposite, narrow, gray-green. G. paniculata leaves are about 4 inches long. G. repens flowers are ½ to 1 inch long.

  • Flowers: Sprays of small white flowers in the summer on many small branches. G. paniculata flowers may be single or double, while G. repens flowers are single.

  • Culture: Full sun and well-drained, soil. G. paniculata requires a high pH soil, while G. repens tolerates fairly acid soils. Develops large fleshy roots.

  • Uses: Border, filler among large-flowered plants in the garden, filler for fresh or dried flower arrangements. Also useful to cover empty spaces left by plants that go dormant by summertime. G. repens works well in rock gardens.

  • Related species: G. elegans is annual baby’s breath.

  • Propagation: Cuttings, division, seed.
