  • Description: Native perennial wildflower with bright red star-shaped flowers and soft gray-green foliage.

  • Origin: Southeastern United States.

  • Height x width: Up to 4 feet tall.

  • Growth habit: Upright.

  • Foliage: Produces 10 to 20 pairs of woolly, opposite leaves.

  • Flowers: Scarlet star-shaped flowers in leaf axils and at stem tips, on top of swollen calyxes. Flowers have notches at their tips.

  • Culture: Full sun to afternoon shade and well-drained soil.

  • Uses: Border.

  • Related species: S. virginica is also native to the Southeastern United States. Silene is also closely related to Lychnis.

  • Propagation: Seed.
