The History of the Computer

12/15/11

Semester Final

Who invented the computer you ask? This is not an easily answered question. The real answer is a lot of people contributed to the creation of the computer. The computer is made up of many parts; each of the parts can be considered a separate invention. Just about each individual piece was invented by a different person.

If you look at most history books, they'll tell you ENIAC. It stands for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer. It was the first true all-purpose electronic computer. This computer was first released in 1946. A whole lot of publicity was drawn to this monstrous 30-ton machine, as big as two semis and filled 19,000 vacuum tubes and 6000 switches

This was the first all electronic computer, invented by J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly. This computer not only could do math problems in 20 seconds that would take a person 40 hours to do but it could also predict the trajectory of enemy artillery. This computer was very complex and was 100 feet ling and 10 feet tall. A very big computer compared to computers today.

A more modern type computer began with John von Neumann's development of software written in binary code. It was von Neumann who began the storing of data and instructions in binary code and initiated the use of memory to store data, as well as programs. A computer called the EDVAC. The Electronic Discrete Variable Computer was built using binary code in 1950. Before the EDVAC, computers like the ENIAC could do only one task then they had to be rewired to perform a different task or program.

The EDVAC's concept on this was slightly different. The EDVAC could store different programs on punched cards instead of rewiring the computer itself. This is what helped lead to the computers that we know today. The computers we use today still use the saving method instead of rewiring it. It is very beneficial to the computer and the users.
