night two

fade in:

int. cavern of souls -- day

Bubbles rise through water.

REVEAL the JUDAS CARETAKER peering down.

An infinite number of UNCONSCIOUS PEOPLE lie in their pods, the pods stretching off into the distance.

The Judas Caretaker floats in, closer, closer, arriving at MATT'S unconscious body in its pod. The Judas Caretaker smiles, narrowing his eyes.

ext. not-for-hire -- day

Sam's stolen riverboat coasts upriver toward its mysterious destination.

int. not-for-hire -- day lounge -- continuous

EVGENY drags ALLEGRA in by the arm.

evgeny

Found this one hiding in the captain's quarters.

Allegra slaps Evgeny and haughtily turns to BURTON.

allegra

I was hardly hiding. I was doing my hair.

evgeny

She had the door locked.

allegra

It is my room.

Burton leans back in his chair. He has a map spread out before him.

burton

I'm afraid that's no longer true.

allegra

(sultrily)

I wouldn't be so hasty. Sam's quarters are drafty. You might want a little extra warmth. Signorina Allegra Bracchioforte de Venezia at your service.

Allegra curtsies.

burton

(dryly)

Charmed. Is she the last one?

evgeny

I smelled a few rats crawling around in the bilge…

int. not-for-hire -- bilge -- continuous

ANTONIO and AMELIE tense, listening in from their cramped hiding place in the bilge.

evgeny (cont'd o/s)

…but we'll get them.

int. not-for-hire -- day lounge -- continuous

Burton considers Allegra for a beat.

burton

Throw her overboard.

Evgeny grabs Allegra's arm.

allegra

Wait, wait!

Allegra pulls free.

allegra (cont'd)

One of your rats, Amelie, our engineer…

int. not-for-hire -- bilge -- continuous

Antonio and Amelia exchange a look.

allegra (cont'd o/s)

…she's quite loyal to Sam.

int. not-for-hire -- day lounge -- continuous

Allegra speaks with Burton.

allegra (cont'd)

A little infatuated, actually. She knows every inch of this ship.

Allegra leans toward Burton seductively.

allegra (cont'd)

I might be able to help you smoke her out.

Burton eyes her. He cocks his head for Evgeny to leave.

Evgeny exits.

burton

So, why are you telling me this?

Burton rises.

allegra

Guess.

Burton fetches himself a drink.

burton

I think you like power. I think whoever controls the boat has power, and if it's not going to be you, then there are... other ways to exert control.

Burton tilts his glass.

allegra

I am transparent to you, unable to hide my motivations, which is a good basis for a partnership, no?

Allegra places her hands on Burton's chest, smiling.

allegra (cont'd)

Besides, you need me. I was Sam's confidante, privy to all his plans to find the Source.

Burton drains his drink and shoves Allegra back against a desk. She gives him a sultry look.

burton

I don't care about Clemens' idiotic quest. I have an agenda of my own.

Burton runs a hand along Allegra's collarbone.

allegra

Really? Does it involve adventure?

Burton considers this for a beat.

burton

If you call Armageddon a lark.

He leans in, speaking directly into her ear.

burton (cont'd)

I'm going to wage war on the gods, shake the Heavens, and bring this entire farce to a conclusion.

Burton removes his jacket and begins unfastening Allegra's bodice.

burton (cont'd)

Now, if you wish to participate, you'd best prove as useful as you say, because I'm not good with disappointment.

Burton rips Allegra's bodice open and kisses her neck. As he kisses her, her eyes remain open, an inscrutable expression on her lips.

Ext. riverbank -- day

TOMOE stops by the riverbank, gazing out.

A short distance behind her, SIMON huffs and puffs along, clearly bone weary. He clambers on all fours over a boulder.

simon

Nothing.

tomoe

No footprints on the other side?

simon

I don't know about Hal, but Matt would have fought like hell. Even if he couldn't swim to shore, I mean... he just would have floated downriver.

tomoe

No. He was shot two times.

Her words hit Simon hard.

simon

I couldn't save him today. I couldn't even do that. I just... I just watched my friend go down in the water. I mean…

Simon tears up, but his words have no effect on Tomoe. It is clear that she is resolved and unmoved.

tomoe

There is but one path we can choose.

EXT. RIVERBANK -- day

SAM looks upstream as YOUSEFF bandages his arm.

sam

We are never going to catch them. We are never going to catch them by following the river. We're tortoises, and that hare ain't getting any slower.

Simon limps up the beach toward them, uncharacteristically subdued.

sam (cont'd)

Are you all right, Mr. Porter?

simon

Not really. No sign of Hal, and...

Simon sits, groaning.

simon (cont'd)

…Matt's gone. I can't believe those words are coming out of my mouth.

sam

Well, are you certain?

simon

Yeah.

sam

What about Tomoe?

Sam looks over at where Tomoe stands on a rock, gazing out at the river.

sam (cont'd)

Is she certain?

simon

She says the only way to find them is to join 'em, and I don't know. I've already been around here twice. I just can't do it again.

sam

Everyone must heed their calling in this life, especially here. Her decision is no more or less valid than yours.

A tear runs down Simon's cheek.

sam (cont'd)

We will see them all again, rest assured.

Sam looks from Youseff to Simon. He sits by the grieving man.

sam (cont'd)

The only real enemy in this life is despair, my friend. I know that. I've been there myself. I lost my wife, my daughters, and I woke up here alone. I found one infallible solution.

youseff

Hey, maybe this is not the time--

sam

(pointedly)

I am pontificating.

(to Simon)

Anger. That's the cure for what ails you. You get yourself good and riled up. That's what I did, transformed myself into a mean-spirited, stubborn, irascible hornet. Raged at the world!

youseff

Anger is a distraction. Purpose. Purpose is a gift from Allah.

sam

We're spending too much time winding back and forth.

Sam picks up his jacket and rises.

sam (cont'd)

The Nottie has to stick to the River. We sure as hell don't.

youseff

Cross the mountains?

sam

Revenge, our most comforting friend, is waiting for us on that boat.

Sam heads up the beach.

Simon looks over at where Tomoe stands staring at the River.

Ext. 1184 a.d. -- riverbank -- day -- flashback

A samurai warlord, KISO YOSHINAKA, kneels at the water's edge. Yoshinaka is 30, handsome, and downcast. His armour is stained with blood.

SUPER: "Omi Province, Japan 1184"

A woman in Samurai armour moves toward him… graceful, purposeful. It's Tomoe, in life Yoshinaka's lover and most able commander. She crouches beside him.

tomoe

(in Japanese, subtitled)

Noriyori's men will be here soon.

yoshinaka

(in Japanese, subtitled)

Then we are lost. I will not be a prisoner.

(long beat)

Or a trophy.

yoshinaka (cont'd)

I've been a poor husband.

ext. riverbank -- resume

Tomoe stares off, lost in memory.

yoshinaka (cont'd v/o)

I wasted our lives on war and grasping for power.

Ext. 1184 a.d. -- riverbank -- day -- flashback

Yoshinaka kneels before Tomoe.

yoshinaka (Cont'd)

I ask for your forgiveness.

(in Japanese, subtitled)

Please forgive me.

Tomoe bows to Yoshinaka.

tomoe

(in Japanese, subtitled)

It's been my greatest honour.

Yoshinaka's eyes fill with tears.

yoshinaka

They will…

ext. riverbank -- resume

Tomoe stares off, lost in memory.

yoshinaka (cont'd v/o)

…remember you long after I have been forgotten. Little girls will ride their ponies, pretending to be…

Ext. 1184 a.d. -- riverbank -- day -- flashback

Yoshinaka speaks to Tomoe.

yoshinaka (cont'd)

…Tomoe Gozen.

Tomoe clutches Yoshinaka's knee.

tomoe

(in Japanese, subtitled)

I should go with you. Into the next life.

yoshinaka

(in Japanese, subtitled)

No. I forbid it.

Tomoe rises.

Yoshinaka readies himself.

Tomoe draws her sword.

Yoshinaka picks up his dagger, unsheathes it.

yoshinaka

(in Japanese, subtitled)

Keep me in your mind.

Yoshinaka stabs himself in the gut. He grunts in pain, but keeps staring rigidly ahead. He pulls the dagger sideways, cutting left to right.

Tomoe's sword slashes down.

Yoshinaka slumps, dead.

ext. riverbank -- resume

Tomoe stares off, lost in thought.

ext. mountains -- day

Tomoe kneels on a mountains slope and pulls open her robe, baring her abdomen. She holds out a dagger.

tomoe

I will find you.

Tomoe plunges the dagger into her gut. Her head bows.

ext. the river -- day

CLOSE ON running water.

int. interrogation centre -- day

MATT wakes, spitting water and gasping for air. He is strapped to a metal table, which tilts like a see-saw. Inky water stands below the tilting table.

The Judas Caretaker stands to one side, watching dispassionately as Matt coughs and hacks.

judas caretaker

Welcome back, Mr. Ellman. Judging by your reaction, your last few moments in the River were not all that pleasant. Please keep that in mind as we proceed.

matt

What are you doing to me? Where am I?

The Judas Caretaker waves a hand and a blue orb flies out and hovers over Matt's face. The Judas Caretaker's eyelids flutter unnaturally, as do Matt's.

int. club wet -- night -- vision

Matt wakes with a groan, his body shattered, bloody. He peers across at where JESSIE stirs slightly.

matt

Jessie?

Distant sirens wail.

matt (cont'd)

It's okay, babe, I'm coming.

Matt drags himself over to Jessie.

int. interrogation centre -- resume

CLOSE ON the Judas Caretaker's and Matt's eyes as they flicker unnaturally.

int. club wet -- night -- vision

Matt cradles Jessie in his arms, groaning with effort.

int. interrogation centre -- resume

The Judas Caretaker's and Matt's eyes flicker unnaturally.

int. club wet -- night -- vision

Matt cradles Jessie.

matt

I'm sorry. I'm sorry, baby. That's why I was afraid to pull you into my life. I never wanted anything to happen to you.

Jessie speaks with effort.

jessie

I saw a ring. A ring... was it for me?

Matt nods.

jessie (cont'd)

Yeah.

Both struggle for breath, gazing into each other's eyes.

jessie (cont'd)

Then I'm happy. My answer is yes.

Jessie's eyes close. She draws her last breath, then goes still.

Matt breaks down.

matt

No... No. No, Jess... Jessie...No, Jessie, wake... Jessie, wake up. W-Wake up, baby. Jess... No...

Matt groans in agony.

int. interrogation centre -- resume

The Judas Caretaker withdraws the blue orb. Matt coughs.

judas caretaker

Hmm, a good strong emotional memory.

matt

No! No, that's not the way it happened.

judas caretaker

Perhaps yes, perhaps no. Who's to say?

The Judas Caretaker smiles coolly.

matt

(angrily)

I was there. That is not the way it happened!

judas caretaker

I'm confused. You wish with all your being that that was the way it happened, yes? So, what's the difference?

matt

What the hell are you doing to me? What the hell are you doing to me?

Two other HOODED CARETAKERS enter silently behind the Judas Caretaker.

matt (cont'd)

That's not the way it happened! That's not the way it... That's not... that's not the way it happened...

ext. the river -- day

The riverboat continues upstream.

int. not-for-hire -- captain's quarters -- day

Allegra falls back on the bed, sweaty, smiling, post-coitus.

allegra

That was...vigorous.

Burton kisses her neck.

burton

When I was a soldier in India, I came across a book called the Kama Sutra. It was... quite educational.

Allegra giggles.

Burton rises, starts to dress. Allegra sits up on the bed, stroking her hair.

burton (cont'd)

It won't work, by the by-- seducing me so that I will relax my guard, and you can find the opportune moment to strike.

Allegra pulls Burton closer, wrapping her legs around him.

allegra

From one serpent to another.

burton

Yes, we are despicable creatures, aren't we? And yet I died of old age in my own bed, with my wife at my side.

Burton kisses Allegra's neck.

allegra

Oh? A moral lesson?

burton

Quite the opposite, really.

allegra

Mm... My death was more... poetic, poisoned by a rival.

burton

Well, just so as you know, I never drink or eat anything that I haven't prepared myself.

allegra

Hmm. Very healthy of you.

Allegra looks back and gives him a sultry look.

allegra (cont'd)

Show me that twisty one again.

Burton turns her forcefully away.

burton

No, not now. Work to do. Worlds to end.

allegra

You really intend to destroy this place?

burton

Watch and see.

int. interrogation centre -- day

Matt is still strapped to the table. The table tilts back. Matt gasps and struggles, unable to draw a breath.

ext. grailstone -- day -- vision

Jessie is thrown down at the base of a Grailstone, screaming and struggling.

jessie

No!

A MAN looms over her, rape and mayhem on his mind.

int. interrogation centre -- resume

CLOSE ON Matt's eyes flickering unnaturally.

ext. grailstone -- day -- vision

SLOW MOTION-- The would-be RAPIST straddles Jessie, pinning her down.

int. interrogation centre -- resume

CLOSE ON Matt's eyes flickering unnaturally.

ext. grailstone -- day -- vision

SLOW MOTION-- Jessie wails and struggles against the Rapist.

Suddenly Burton steps up and delivers a kick to the Rapist's face. A quick punch sends the Rapist sprawling on the ground.

The Rapist dispatched, Burton gently helps Jessie to sit up. They lock eyes.

burton

Well, I think that's quite enough of that nonsense.

Jessie lets her head fall against Burton's chest. She sobs quietly.

ext. riverbank -- day -- vision

Jessie talks to various PEOPLE on the bank. She looks disappointed, lost. Finally she sits and bows her head.

REVEAL Burton standing a short distance away, watching her. He approaches, lays a hand on hers, and sits down beside her.

burton (cont'd)

So who exactly is it you're looking for?

Jessie smiles.

jessie

Am I that obvious?

burton

This world is home to thousands of villages and hundreds of thousands of people, perhaps all of humanity at one point or another, and everyone is looking for someone.

jessie

Including yourself?

burton

I may be the exception. I'm looking for a way out.

Burton looks at her.

burton (cont'd)

Though you may be an argument to the contrary.

Jessie considers him for a long beat. She leans in. They kiss, gently at first, and then more passionately.

ext. riverbank -- later -- vision

Burton and Jessie kiss passionately by the riverbank, alone now.

Ext. woods -- day

Trees sway gently in the afternoon breeze.

REVEAL Matt, still strapped to the interrogation table, which is now in the middle of a forest grove. The Judas Caretaker stands over him, monitoring a glowing orb hovering over Matt's face.

The Judas Caretaker flicks his wrists and the orb withdraws. Matt wakes. He coughs and roars.

matt

You son of a bitch!

judas caretaker

Clearly, not an image you wish to cherish.

matt

It's not real. This, all those images in my head, it's just some sick game you're playing! None of it's real!

The Judas Caretaker smiles slightly.

matt (cont'd)

Is it?

(shouts)

Is this real?

judas caretaker

Define "real."

The Judas Caretaker blows on his fingers and a shimmering shaft of water flies into Matt's mouth. The interrogation table tilts back and Matt grunts and gasps for air.

With a wave of his hand, the Judas Caretaker draws the water out of Matt's mouth again. The interrogation table tilts up.

judas caretaker (cont'd)

Interesting. You have no Grailband, you stopped Pizarro, you almost took the ship from Burton, and yet you expect me to believe that was all random chance?

The Judas Caretaker leans in, sharply biting off his words.

judas caretaker (cont'd)

What did they ask of you? The Second Chancers? What did they ask you to do?

Matt laughs bitterly.

matt

I have no idea what you're talking about. I just want to find her! Jessie! The girl you showed me in my dreams. I just want to find the real Jessie. I just want to find the real Jessie. That's it.

judas caretaker

Perhaps that was the real Jessie, the one so vividly displayed, or would you prefer to cling onto a burnished image from the past?

matt

You're so good at reading the bumps on my head, you tell me.

judas caretaker

Sadly, I suspect you would not be able to accept the truth.

matt

(beat)

I have no reason to accept your truth.

judas caretaker

If you wish the discomfort to end, you will.

Matt raises his head angrily.

matt

You don't have…

Int. interrogation centre -- continuous

Matt, still strapped to the table, is back in the interrogation centre.

matt (cont'd)

…the slightest clue who I...

Matt stops abruptly, seeing his changed location. The two other Caretakers look on from the shadows.

matt (cont'd)

…am.

judas caretaker

You have a surprising appetite for abuse. It would seem you've come to the right place.

The table tilts back again, Matt's mouth filling with water. He splutters and gags.

ext. slavers' camp -- day

From a lofty vantage, Youseff spies on a camp built around a Grailstone. The camp is heavily fortified, with spear-carrying GUARDS keeping watch over downcast SLAVES.

One of the Guards snatches a Slave's meal and shoves the Slave away.

Among the other Slaves is a familiar face-- it's HAL. Hal is bound to a tree stump, his hands behind his back. A Guard looms over him threateningly.

hAL

Leave me alone.

The Guard grunt menacingly. Hal breaks down, crying.

Youseff withdraws.

EXT. SAM'S CAMPSITE -- day

Sam sits propped against a boulder, wrapped in a blanket, hidden in a small grove by a campfire. Simon paces nearby, trembling and holding his blanket close.

simon

If I had to come back from the dead, why not somewhere hot, man, like Jamaica? This is not Eyrie.

Sam speaks without opening his eyes.

sam

You may want to conserve energy. We've got a long climb ahead of us.

simon

Look, man, I hate waiting, man. I always have.

sam

Not much on sleep, either, I'd say.

simon

Hey, sleep is for the rich. I prefer the casino. Good place to hang out all night, and it kinda keeps me out of the upper tax bracket.

Sam rises stiffly, grinning.

sam

A man after my own heart.

simon

Ah-hah.

sam

I too enjoy a good wager.

Sam picks up a cup warmed by the fire.

Youseff returns to deliver his report.

sam (cont'd)

It's another slaver camp. Same as every Grailstone between here and the River. Nine slavers, a dozen slaves.

simon

What is up with mankind and slavery?

youseff

Each Grailband only works once a day, so if you want to eat well...

Sam gazes off into the woods.

sam

The strong will always prey on the weak. That is the sad nature of humanity.

Simon steps up beside Sam.

simon

Hey, Sam, I've been meaning to ask you, what was it like in the Civil War?

sam

Nothing civil about it.

Youseff

There is one more thing.

They turn to Youseff.

youseff (cont'd)

I saw one of our friends down there-- Hal. He's being held captive.

Simon grins and taps Sam's arm.

simon

So, if the professor made it, what about Matt?

Youseff shakes his head grimly.

sam

Then it's settled.

Sam draws his gun.

sam (cont'd)

We're taking the Stone.

Sam clicks open his gun and checks the chambers.

youseff

Three to one odds, the element of surprise on our side. Could be worse.

Sam chuckles.

Youseff pulls the blanket off of Simon's shoulders.

youseff (cont'd)

(singing)

Allons enfants de la Patrie
Le jour de gloire est arrivé!

Youseff pulls a knife out of his belt and hands it roughly to Simon.

Sam grins.

sam

(to Youseff)

You enjoy fighting far too much.

youseff

Yeah, it beats driving a taxi.

Youseff strides off into the wood.

sam

All right, Mr. Porter. Here we go.

Sam heads out, gun ready.

Simon hesitantly draws his knife and follows.

simon

Coming.

The three men lope into the woods.

ext. woods / various locations -- day -- montage

Matt is strapped to the table, trembling, receiving visions.

Burton shoots Matt on the pier.

Matt trembles on the table.

Matt collapses, gripping his wounded belly, Simon and Tomoe crouched over him.

Matt trembles on the table.

(CONTINUED)

Matt grips his wounded belly.

matt

Jessie...

Matt trembles.

Matt holds up the ring in the club, smiling.

Jessie grins back at him.

Matt mouths the word, "No!"

Lilli's hand presses the detonator button.

Matt sits wounded on the pier.

matt (cont'd)
