Project 13x: Family Safety 10 Pts

This project was written for Windows 7 Beta.

Installing Windows Live Software

  1. You may already have installed the Windows Live tools in a previous project. If you haven't done that, do these steps:

  1. In Firefox, go to this address.

download.live.com/wlmail

  1. Click the Download button. Save the wlsetup-web.exe file on your desktop.

  2. On your desktop, double-click the wlsetup-web.exe file.

  3. Install the software with the default options. This will add several programs to your Windows 7 machine, as shown to the right on this page.

Starting Windows Family Safety

  1. Press the Windows logo key. Type FAM into the search box.

  2. "Windows Live Family Safety" should appear in the Programs list. If it's not already highlighted, press the down-arrow as needed to highlight it. Then press the Enter key.

  3. Log in with your Windows Live account. If you don't have one, click the "Sign up" link to get one.

  4. The "Windows Live Family Safety Filter" box appears, with the filter set to On in the upper left corner, as shown below on this page.

Creating the Child Account

  1. In the "Windows Live Family Safety Filter" box, click "Go to the Family Safety website".

  2. A Web page opens, titled "Windows Live". Enter your password when you are prompted to.

  3. The "Family Safety" page opens. Click "Add child".

  4. A box pops up titled "Family Safety – Windows Live". Click the "Create child ID" box.

  5. Fill in the form with a child ID. I recommend just adding "child" to the parent ID for this project, but you can use any name you like.

  6. In the upper left of the browser window, click "Family Safety" to return to the "Family Summary" screen, as shown below on this page.

  1. In the "Child accounts" section, click the link saying "Important: Action required…". A box pops up explaining how to activate the Family Safety Filter.

Activating the Family Safety Filter

  1. On the lower right of your desktop, in the Notification Area, click the "Family Safety" icon, as shown to the right on this page. You may need to click the upward-pointing triangle to reveal it.
