Prior to his appointment to the University of Innsbruck (1994): Doctorate and 'habilitation' (postdoctoral lecturing qualification) at the University of Graz.

Head of the Department of New Literatures in English und Associate Professor at Graz. Visiting Professor/Research Fellow at the University of Münster, Mansfield College Oxford, University of Trieste, National University of Singapore, University of Nigeria, Doshisha University Kyoto, Aichi Shukutoku University Nagoya, University of Nigeria, University of Halle-Wittenberg, Concordia University of Montreal, Griffith University of Brisbane et al. Declined offer of a Chair of English Literature at the University of Halle-Wittenberg (1997).

Past Vice-President of the International Association for the Study of Irish Literature and the European Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies. Director of the Centre for the International Study of Literatures in English. Numerous lectures at universities and conferences in ca. 30 countries.

Chairman of big international conferences and winner of several prizes and awards for his scholarly work. (Co-)Editor of three scholarly periodicals and two series of monographs.

Research especially on 18th-century English and Irish literatures, New Literatures and Cultures in English (especially on national stereotypes, colonialism, cultural conflict und transculturality) as well as on literary theory and theory of English Studies.

Long-time commitment to university politics and management in various positions.
