WHEREAS, 150 years ago, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act of 1862, creating the original Union Pacific; and
WHEREAS, in the years and decades that followed, the Union Pacific played a role in such landmark events as the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, development of the first “Big Boy” steam locomotive, revolutionizing the use of streamliners for luxury passenger rail travel, and setting a coast-to-coast speed record; and
WHEREAS, the Union Pacific Railroad has had a rich and colorful history which includes numerous mergers and acquisitions, a scandal, a bankruptcy and unfortunate natural disasters, yet has always emerged smarter and stronger; and
Whereas, Union Pacific Railroad has the distinction of being the largest rail company in the United States, linking 24 states in this country by rail, providing freight solutions and logistics expertise to the global supply chain; and
Whereas, during the past 10 years, Union Pacific has spent more than $31 billion on its network and operations, making needed investments in America’s infrastructure and enhancing its ability to provide safe, reliable, fuel-efficient and environmentally responsible freight transportation; and
Whereas, the history of rail in this country is inextricably linked to the development of our nation; and
Whereas, the origin of Mesquite, Texas can be traced to the railroad and a railroad surveyor named A. R. Alcott who identified the placement for a humble railroad depot in eastern Dallas County; and
Whereas, the city of Mesquite has long enjoyed significant benefits from the influence of the railroad, and especially the presence of one of the Union Pacific Railroad’s largest intermodal facilities; and
Whereas, today we celebrate Union Pacific Railroad’s sesquicentennial anniversary and the City of Mesquite’s quasquicentennial anniversary and use these momentous occasions to pay tribute to the productive working relationship between the two entities.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John Monaco, Mayor of the City of Mesquite, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, October 30, 2012, as:
“UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD DAY” in the City of Mesquite, and urge all citizens to join me in congratulating Union Pacific Railroad for 150 years of excellence and extending best wishes for many successful years of outstanding growth.
