This paper presents some findings on identification and biology of the leaf-eating insect damaging leaves of Cinnamomum camphora tree in My Hao, Hung Yen.
The leaf-eating insect was identified as Samia cynthia Drury belonging to the family Saturniidae (Lepidoptera). The result will add this species to the list of insects damaging Cinnamomum camphora tree in Vietnam.
The life cycle of Samia cynthia was investigated at temperatures from 29.3oC to 32.5oC, and humidity from 69.7% to 76,8% using fresh leaves of Cinnamomum camphora tree as food. The duration of the egg, larval, pupal and pre-oviposition periods lasted 17.2, 23.8, 10.3 and 1.4 days, respectively. Samia cynthia completes its life cycle in 52.7 days. The female laid an average of 374.6 eggs during period of 7.4 days. The mean longevity of adults was 8.9 days.
