COOPERATING FACULTY MEMBER,

SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION LEADER AND

SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION SUPERVISOR
DEFINITION:

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a learning enhancement program, which was developed at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and is disseminated to other institutions of higher education. Through this program, a student who has received a high grade in a targeted course undergoes SI training and then re-attends the course to model effective student practices and attitudes (e.g., taking complete notes, asking appropriate questions, completing text and outside reading assignments promptly). The SI Leader usually schedules and conducts three group meetings a week at times convenient to members of the class. During these sessions, the SI Leader will use interactive learning strategies that encourage involvement, comprehension, synthesis, cognitive monitoring, and higher order reasoning skills. In addition, the SI Leader will incorporate demonstrations of effective study techniques and special subject area applications into the sessions. At SAU, the program is funded federally through TRiO funds, which are available on our campus to assist in student retention and academic success. Funds are available to hire student leaders in historically difficult courses. A partnership is formed between the participating faculty, student leaders, and the SI Coordinator, who is the SI Leaders’ supervisor.

COOPERATING FACULTY MEMBER AGREES TO:

  1. Make (or allow to be made) periodic announcements about SI sessions, asking all students to participate;

  2. Avoid suggesting that only those who do poorly will benefit;

  3. Maintain SI as a recommended, encouraged activity rather than a requirement;

  4. Avoid asking the SI Leader to perform “instructor-like” tasks, such as grading, helping create test questions, or lecturing in your place.

  5. Sign weekly sign-in sheets when the SI Leader attends your class (at the end of class each time), verifying that the SI Leader has attended your class that day. Call the SI office at x 4052 or email rejenkins@saumag.edu when a SI Leader is absent or late or leaves early from your class.

SI LEADER AGREES TO:

  1. Attend all class meetings; due to recent budget restraints, prior permission must be given by the SI Coordinator in order for SI Leaders to make up hours missed due to off campus field trips, illness, and/or family emergencies.

  2. Demonstrate good note-taking practices and help others develop and use note taking skills;

  3. Maintain a professional attitude about matters such as class standards, grades, and student complaints;

  4. Use interactive learning strategies rather than lecture or complete students’ assignments/homework for them;

  5. Discourage attending SI as a substitute for class;

  6. Prepare handouts, matrices, learning aids, and informal quizzes for SI sessions;

  7. Provide feedback loop (if requested to do so by the cooperating faculty member) and share SI materials with faculty before use if possible.

(Please see the other side.)

SI COORDINATOR AGREES TO:

  1. Cooperate with faculty in selecting candidates for SI Leaders, and place leaders only with the approval of the cooperating faculty member;

  2. Train all SI Leaders according to established guidelines and standards;

  3. Monitor the activities and presentations of SI Leaders for as long as necessary by attending class with them, helping them plan sessions, supervising their sessions, and critiquing their performances;

  4. Provide supplies, in-service experiences, consultations, and learning strategy sessions for SI Leaders;

  5. Complete and provide cooperative faculty with an end-of-term comparative analysis of student performance.
