CAN SAWDUST SUBSITUTE FOR WOOD AS A FUEL?

Each group will be handed the following apparatus.

  1. Logs of wood - for burning in the open

  2. Sawdust stove and sawdust

  3. 2 litres of water


Step 1.

Collect your apparatus from your teacher.
Steps 2 and 3 can be done simultaneously with two members of a group working on each.
Step 2.
Working with sawdust


  • Fill the sawdust stove with sawdust as instructed by your teacher.

  • Remove the sawdust and weigh it.

  • Refill the stove with the weighed sawdust.

  • Light the stove using a small twig and dry leaves.

  • Time the start of lighting the fire.

  • Observe the initial stage (about 10 minutes) – amount of smoke, colour of flame etc

  • Place the pot with 1 litre of water on the stove.

  • Time the point when water boils and record your observations

  • Remove the pot of water.

  • Wait for the sawdust in the stove to burn out completely.

  • Record the time taken for sawdust to burn completely

  • Observe the bottom of the pot and record your observations

  • Record the colour of flame and amount of smoke given out etc.


Step 3.
Working with wood fire


  • You must take the amount of wood that weighs the same as the sawdust in the stove.

  • Arrange the weighed wood on the ground and set up 3 stones around it to support a pot of water.

  • Light the wood using a small twigs and dry leaves.

  • Time the start of lighting the fire.

  • Observe the initial stage (about 10 minutes) – amount of smoke, colour of flame etc

  • Place the pot with 1 litre of water on the stove.

  • Time the point when water boils and record your observations

  • Remove the pot of water.

  • Wait for the wood to burn out completely.

  • Record the time taken for wood to burn completely

  • Observe the bottom of the pot and record your observations

  • Record the colour of flame and amount of smoke given out etc.
