Description: A standard warm-weather bedding plant, reliably blooming over a long period. Annual.
Height x width: 8 inches to nearly 3 feet.
Growth habit: Upright.
Foliage: Bright to dark green, elliptical and toothed.
Flowers: Flowers are traditionally bright red but newer varieties include those with white, salmon and purple flowers. Flowers grow on spikes and are two-lipped, with a flat lower lip and helmet-shaped upper lip.
Culture: In cooler climates, plant in full sun. In areas with very hot summers, partial shade, especially in the afternoon, reduces stress. Prefers average to slightly dry, well-drained soil. Larger varieties with deeper roots need less water than dwarf varieties. Deadhead when flowers drop and leave a ragged spike.
Pests : and problems Snails and slugs, especially in moist conditions and when plants are mulched.
Uses: Annual salvia is a good vertical accent in a container. A medium to tall variety can be surrounded by other annuals. Because of the uniformity of bedding plant varieties, they can also be used very successfully in a border.
Propagation: Seed, cuttings.
