PART A: ETHERNET AND THE LOCAL NETWORK
1) All machines in the design center have 100BT network cards. Also, the design center infrastructure is entirely switched Ethernet.

The core of the network is a 3Com 9300 Superstack II Gigabit Ethernet switch, capable of handling twelve gigabits of network traffic per second. This uplinks to the campus backbone and other engineering buildings through fiber-optic, gigabit connections.


Inside the Design Center, each workstation is provided a dedicated 100 Mbit connection through a stack of 3Com 3300 Superstack II Fast Ethernet switches.

2) In the first applet, if the bus length is increased while frame size and transmission rate stay the same, the time it will take for the transmission to complete increases each time. The value almost doubles when length is changed from 100 to 1000, but changes slightly when it’s changed from 1000 to 2500. For example, the smaller the length and the bigger the size gets, the faster the transmissions complete.

Moreover, increase in rate has the biggest effect in reducing the transmission times. When rate is changed from 10 to 100 it can be observed that the transmission time reduces tremendously.
In the third case, where there are hidden terminals one mobile station cannot hear the transmission of other mobile stations, whereas in the second case, this is not so.
3) Among “assigned internet protocol numbers” the decimal protocol number for UDP (User Datagram Protocol) is 17. Also, Datagram Delivery Protocol (DDP) is assigned the protocol number 37.
The name of the protocol that is used for IP Datagram is “EtherIP”.

And the protocol number assigned to ARP packets is 2054 (assigned by IANA).

4) There are 24 machines on my network, getting their address through DHCP.

5) Average price for a 10Mbps hub is around 18.00 dollars.

This price for a 100Mbps hub can range from approximately $28.00 to $49.99.



This number gets almost multiplied by 10, when it comes to a switch. For a 10Mbps switch the average price is about $210.00.

Also switches come in combinations of 10Mbps/100Mbps/1000Mbps. In those cases the price is usually around $200-$250 bucks, but can vary.
