Ref. Astanga hrdayam

Flowers of Madhuca longifolia (Koenig) Macbr. ( 192 gm) is made into decoction using 900 ml of water and concentrated into 150 ml of decoction and add 192 gm of honey and kept for fermentation.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 30 ml.

Biomedical properties

This asava is excellent for grahani.


2. Madhugasava

Ref. Astanga hrdayam

Flowers of Madhuca longifolia (Koenig) Macbr. (12.288 kg), 6.144 kg of Embelia ribes Burm.f., 3.072 kg bark of Plumbago zeylanica L., 384 gm of Semecarpus anacardium L.f., Rubia cordifolia L. are powdered and made into decoction using 45 litres of water and concentrated into 15 litres of decoction. Then add 1.536 kg of honey and allowed for fermentation. The fermentation pot is lined with Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn., Aquilaria agallocha Roxb. and Santalum album L.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 30 ml.



Biomedical properties

This asava is reputed medicine for grahani, leprosy, leucoderma, diabetes and increases digestive power as well as nourishes the body.


3. Maha amritarishta

Ref. Peshajakalpa shamutsayam (Saraka samhita)

One kg of Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook. f & Thomson, 1 kg of dasamoolam [Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa, Premna obtusifolia R.Br. root , Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth, Gmelina asiatica L., Stereospermum colais (Buch.-Ham.ex Dillwyn) Mabb., Solanum virginianum L., Solanum anguivi Lam., Pseudarthria viscida Wight & Arn., Desmodium gangeticum (L.) DC., Tribulus terrestris L.], 500 gm of Andrographis paniculata (Burm. F.) Wall. ex Ness, Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora Pennell, Alstonia scholaris R.Br., Cyperus rotundus L., Trichosanthes lobata Roxb., are powdered and made decoction using 80 litres of water and concentrated into 20 litres of decoction. Then add presheba suranam [10 kg of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz., 10 kg of jaggery, 5 kg of honey, 100 gm of Piper longum L., Azadirachta indica A. Juss, Aconitum heterophyllum Wall. ex Royle, Piper nigrum L., Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash, Plectranthus vettiveroides (Jacob) Singh &Sharma, Plumbago zeylanica L., Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Andrographis paniculata (Burm. F.) Wall. ex Ness, Cuminum cyminum L., Nigella sativa L., Tragia plukenetii Radcl. Sm., Inula racemosa Hook. F., Ipomoea turpethum (L.) R. Br., Mesua nagassarium (Burm. F.) Kosterm, Santalum album L., Piper nigrum L., Prunus cerasoides D. Don, Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) R.Br.] and kept for fermentation.

Biomedical properties

This arishta is useful for fever, enlargement of liver and spleen.


4. Maha manjistathyasava

Each of 1 kg of Manjisdathiganam ingredients (Rubia cordifolia L., Cyperus rotundus L., Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) R.Br., Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook. f & Thomson, Costus speciosus (Koenig ex Retz.) Sm., Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Clerodendrum serratum (L.) Moon, Solanum americanum Mill, Acorus calamus L., Azadirachta indica A. Juss, Curcuma longa L., Coscinium fenestratum Colebr., Terminalia chebula Retz., Emblica offcinalis Gaertn., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Trichosanthes lobata Roxb., Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora Pennell, Sansevieria roxburghiana Schult.f., Embelia ribes Burm.f., Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb., Plumbago zeylanica L., Asparagus racemosus Willd., Smilax china L., Piper longum L., Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) Lam.) are powdered and made into decoction using 720 litres of water and concentrated into 90 litres. Then add presheba suranam [1.600 kg of Manjisdathiganam, 1.600 kg of Piper longum L., 1.600 kg of Commiphora wightii (Arn.) Bhandari, 1.600 kg of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz.] and kept for fermentation.

Biomedical properties

This asava is good for all skin diseases, itching, vatarakta and elephantiasis.


5. Maha rasnathyarishta

Ref. Saraka samhita

Each of 600 gm of Rasnathiganam ingredients (Alpinia galanga L.Sw, Tragia plukenetii Radcl. Sm., Sida rhombifolia L., Ricinus communis L., Cedrus deodara (Roxb. ex D.Don) G.Don, Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe, Acorus calamus L., Justicia beddomei (C.B.Clarke) Bennet, Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Terminalia chebula Retz. Piper nigrum L., Cyperus rotundus L., Boerhavia diffusa L., Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook. f & Thomson, Argyreia nervosa (Burm. f.) Boj., Anethum graveolens L., Tribulus terrestris L., Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal, Aconitum heterophyllum Wall. ex Royle, Cassia fistula L., Asparagus racemosus Willd., Piper longum L., Barleria prionitis L. , Coriandrum sativum L., Solanum americanum Mill, Solanum anguivi Lam., Smilax china L., Sphaeranthus indicus L., Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa, Sida rhombifolia L.) are powdered and made intidecoction using 288 litres of water and concentrated into 72 litres. Then add as presheba suranam, 30 kg of jaggery, 50 gm of Rasnathiganam (30), 800 gm of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz. and kept for fermentation.

This arishta is excellent for all type of vata problems.


6. Maha thikthakasava

Each of 100 gm of the Mahathikdaga ganam materials [Alstonia scholaris R.Br., Hedyotis corymbosa (L.) Lam., Cassia fistula L., Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora Pennell, Acorus calamus L., Glycyrrhiza glabra L., Terminalia chebula Retz., Emblica offcinalis Gaertn., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) R.Br., Holarrhena pubescens (Buch- Ham) Wall. ex G. Don, Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook. f & Thomson, Prunus cerasoides D. Don, Sida cordifolia L., Curcuma longa L., Coscinium fenestratum Colebr., Hemidesmus indicus R.Br., Decalepis hamiltonii Wight & Arn., Piper longum L., Rhaphidophora laciniata R. Pertusa (Roxb.) Schott, Santalum album L., Azadirachta indica A. Juss, Justicia beddomei (C.B.Clarke) Bennet, Sansevieria roxburghiana Schult.f., Asparagus racemosus Willd., Aconitum heterophyllum Wall. ex Royle, Trichosanthes lobata Roxb., Cyperus rotundus L., Tragia plukenetii Radcl. Willd., 6.400 kg of Emblica offcinalis Gaertn., are powdered and made into decoction using 204.800 litres of water and concentrated into 51.200 litres. Then add the following ingredients as presheba suranam are 20 kg of jaggery, 10 kg of honey, 1 kg of Mahathikganam (32), 1 kg of Hemidesmus indicus R.Br., 1 kg of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz. and kept for fermentation.

Biomedical properties

This asava is good for all types of skin diseases, jaundice, drowsiness and all types of pitta diseases.


7. Mandoorarishta

Ref. Kadhanikragam

Ferroferric oxide (2.400 kg), 2.400 kg of thin iron plate, 2.400 kg of old jaggery, 2.304 kg fruits of Ziziphus mauritiana Lam., 96 gm of Merremia turpethum Rendle, 96 gm of Plumbago zeylanica L., 192 gm of Piper longum L., 192 gm of Embelia ribes Burm.f., 768 gm bark of Terminalia chebula Retz., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Emblica offcinalis Gaertn. Are powdered and mixed in the 15 litres of water and kept for fermentation.

The prescribed amount is 7.5 – 30 ml



Biomedical properties

This arishta is anaemia, leprosy and respiratory disorders.


8. Masigasava

Ref. Kadhanikragam



Solanum americanum Mill (2.400 kg) is powdered and made into decoction using 7.500 litres of water and concentrated into one fourth of decoction and add 9.600 kg of jaggery, 48 gm of Embelia ribes Burm.f., Piper longum L., Rhaphidophora laciniata R. Pertusa (Roxb.) Schott, Cinnamomum verum Presl skin, Cinnamomum verum Presl flower, Mesua nagassarium (Burm. F.) Kosterm and Piper nigrum L. and kept for fermentation.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 30 ml



Biomedical properties

This asava is recommended for cough, asthma and throat related diseases.



9. Masthvasava

Ref. Kadhanikragam

Curd (7.500 litres), 4.800 kg of jaggery, 768 gm of Piper longum L., Terminalia chebula Retz., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Emblica offcinalis Gaertn., 192 gm of Embelia ribes Burm.f., Piper nigrum L., Gmelina asiatica L., Vitis vinifera L., Phoenix dactylifera L., Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) R.Br., 96 gm leaves, flowers, stems, fruits and roots of Piper longum L., Merremia turpethum Rendle, Plumbago zeylanica L. and Semecarpus anacardium L.f. are powdered and mixed together and allowed for fermentation.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 30 ml.



Biomedical properties

This asava is good medicine for anaemia, grahani, ascitis, piles, enlargement of spleen and gulma.


10. Mathvarishta

Ref. Saraka samhita

A new mud pot is lined with Piper longum L., honey and fumed with Aquilaria agallocha Roxb. then filled with 6.144 kg of honey and 10 litres of water and add 96 gm of Embelia ribes Burm.f., 192 gm of Piper longum L., 48 gm of bamboo salt, Mesua nagassarium (Burm. F.) Kosterm, Piper nigrum L., 12 gm of Cinnamomum verum Presl skin, Cinnamomum verum Presl flower, Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe, Areca catechu L., Aconitum heterophyllum Wall. ex Royle

Cyperus rotundus L., Piper attenuatum Buch..Ham.ex Wall., Mukia maderaspatana (L.) M. Roem, Celastrus paniculatus Willd., Piper longum L. and Plumbago zeylanica L. then the ingredients are allowed for fermentation

The prescribed amount is 15 – 30 ml.



Biomedical properties

This arishta is used as good appetizer and useful for digestive, anaemia, grahani, leprosy, piles and chronic fevers.




11. Mathvasava

Ref. Saraka samhita



Acacia catechu (L.f.) Willd. (384 gm), Cedrus deodara (Roxb. ex D.Don) G.Don are powdered and made decoction using 7.500 litres of water and concentrated into one fourth of decoction. Then add, 768 gm of honey, 384 gm of Acacia catechu (L.f.) Willd., Cedrus deodara (Roxb. ex D.Don) G.Don, iron powder, 12 gm of Terminalia chebula Retz., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Emblica offcinalis Gaertn., Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, Cinnamomum verum Presl skin, Cinnamomum verum Presl flower, Piper nigrum L., Mesua nagassarium (Burm. F.) Kosterm, 768 gm of sugar and kept for fermentation.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 30 ml.



Biomedical properties

This asava is suggested for leprosy and leucoderma.


12. Mirugamadasava

Ref. Bhaishajya Ratnavali



Merdasanjivani vinegar (2.400 kg), 1.200 kg of honey, 192 gm of Abelmoschus moschatus Medicus, each of 96 gm of Piper nigrum L., Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry, Myristica fragrans Houtt., Piper longum L., and Cinnamomum verum Presl are powdered, dissolved and kept for fermentation.

Note

Rectified spirit is used for in stead of Merdasanjivani vinegar.

The prescribed amount is 5-15 drops.

Biomedical properties

This asava is effective in asthma, cough, sprains, hiccough, vomiting, nervous disorders, and consumption.


13. Miruthasanjiviniasava – 1

Acacia catechu (L.f.) Willd. (1.200 kg), 480 gm skin of Punica granatum L., Justicia beddomei (C.B.Clarke) Bennet, Bombax ceiba L., Acacia sinuata (Lour.) Merr., Aconitum heterophyllum Wall. ex Royle, Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal, Cedrus deodara (Roxb. ex D.Don) G.Don, Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa, Stereospermum colais (Buch.-Ham.ex Dillwyn) Mabb, Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth, Desmodium gangeticum (L.) DC., Solanum virginianum L., Solanum anguivi Lam, Tribulus terrestris L., Ziziphus mauritiana Lam., Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad., Plumbago zeylanica L., Mucuna pruriens (L.) DC., Boerhavia diffusa L., are powdered and dissolved using 54 litres of water and add 12.288 kg one year old jaggery, and allowed for fermentation. After 20 days, 1.536 kg of Areca catechu L., each of 96 gm of Datura metal L., Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry, Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn., Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash, Santalum album L., Anethum graveolens L., Trachyspermum roxburghianum (DC.) Craib., Piper nigrum L., Cuminum cyminum L., Nigella sativa L., Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe, Nardostachys grandiflora DC., Cinnamomum verum Presl, Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, Myristica fragrans Houtt., Cyperus rotundus L., Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Trigonella foenum-graecum L., Aristolochia bracteolata Lam. and Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb. After fermentation, the liquid is filtered and consumed.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 30 ml.

This asava is very effective in weakness, digestion and leathergy.



Miruthasanjiviniasava- 2

Ref. Bhaishajya Ratnavali

Jaggery (4.800 kg) is dissolved in 24 litres of water then add, 96 gm of Zingiber officinale Roscoe, 768 gm of Acacia nilotica (L.) Willd. ex Del, 768 gm of Ziziphus mauritiana Lam. Skin, 192 gm of Aponogeton natans Engl.& Krause. After 20 days, each of 24 gm of Acacia nilotica (L.) Willd. ex Del, Ziziphus mauritiana Lam. Skin , Areca catechu L., Mukia maderaspatana (L.) M. Roem, Cedrus deodara (Roxb. ex D.Don) G.Don, Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry, Prunus cerasoides D. Don, Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash, Santalum album L., Anethum graveolens L., Trachyspermum roxburghianum (DC.) Craib., Piper nigrum L., Cuminum cyminum L., Nigella sativa L., Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe, Nardostachys grandiflora DC., Cinnamomum verum Presl, Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, Myristica fragrans Houtt., Cyperus rotundus L., Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Trigonella foenum-graecum L., Aristolochia bracteolata Lam., Santalum album L. and kept for fermentation.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 30 ml.



14. Moolasava

Ref. Bhaishajya Ratnavali

Each of 240 gm of dasamoolam [Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa, Premna obtusifolia R.Br. root , Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth, Gmelina asiatica L. , Stereospermum colais (Buch.-Ham.ex Dillwyn) Mabb., Solanum virginianum L., Solanum anguivi Lam., Pseudarthria viscida Wight & Arn., Desmodium gangeticum (L.) DC., Tribulus terrestris L.], Curcuma longa L., Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash, Malaxis acuminata D.Don (or) Ipomoea mauritiana Jacq., Malaxis muscifera (Lindl.)Kuntze, are dissolved in 30 litres water and add, 9.600 kg of jaggery, each of 96 gm of honey, Callicarpa macrophylla Vahl., Cyperus rotundus L., Rubia cordifolia L., Embelia ribes Burm.f., Glycyrrhiza glabra L., Aponogeton natans Engl.& Krause and kept for fermentation.

The prescribed amount of medication is 15 – 30 ml.



Biomedical properties

This asava is a good medicine for anaemia, indigestion and acts as an appetizer.


15. Mridvigasava

Ref. Sarngadhra Samhita

Dry fruits of Vitis vinifera L. (4.800 kg) is dissolved and made into decoction using 300 litres of water and concentrated into 7.500 litres of decoction and then add 4.800 kg of sugar, 4.800 kg of honey, 768 gm of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz., 48 gm of Piper cubeba L.f., Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry, Myristica fragrans Houtt., Piper nigrum L., Cinnamomum verum Presl skin, Cinnamomum verum Presl flower, Mesua nagassarium (Burm. F.) Kosterm, Piper longum L., Plumbago zeylanica L., Piper nigrum L., Piper longum L. and Piper attenuatum Buch..Ham.ex Wall.and kept for fermentation. The fermentation pot is lined with ghee. Finally, 6 gm of Cinnamomum camphora (L.) Presl is added.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 30 ml.



Biomedical properties

This asava is very effective in weakness, exhaustion, lethargy and cough and corrects digestion and bowel movements.




16. Mustharishta

Ref. Bhaishajya Ratnavali



Cyperus rotundus L. (9.600 kg) is powdered and made decoction using 60 litres of water and concentrated into 15 litres of decoction. Then add, 14.400 kg of jaggery, 768 gm inflorescence of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz., each of 96 gm of Trachyspermum roxburghianum (DC.) Craib., Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Piper nigrum L., Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry, Trigonella foenum-graecum L., Plumbago zeylanica L. and Cuminum cyminum L. and then allowed for fermentation.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 30 ml.



Biomedical properties

This arishta is useful for Grahani of children, poor digestion, diarrhoea, anorexia and other related disease.
