LOJ #148: ‘Locked Out’

Andover Baptist Church-June 6th, 2012

Opening

A. Text for today is primarily Luke 13:22-30 but we will also look

at John 10:40-42and our sermon is titled ‘Locked Out’

B. Scripture NET:

John 10:40–42 (NET) 40 Jesus went back across the Jordan River again to the place where John had been baptizing at an earlier time, and he stayed there. 41 Many came to him and began to say, “John performed no miraculous sign, but everything John said about this man was true!” 42 And many believed in Jesus there.”

Luke 13:22–30 (NET) 22 Then Jesus traveled throughout towns and villages, teaching and making His way toward Jerusalem. 23 Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few be saved?” So He said to them, 24 “Exert every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. 25 Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, then you will stand outside and start to knock on the door and beg Him, ‘Lord, let us in!’ But He will answer you, ‘I don’t know where you come from.’ 26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ 27 But He will reply, ‘I don’t know where you come from! Go away from Me, all you evildoers!’ 28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves thrown out. 29 Then people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and take their places at the banquet table in the kingdom of God. 30 But indeed, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

C. Children’s Sermon (SLIDE)
1. What do you think is going on in the picture on the

screen?

2. It looks like a guy wants to get into somewhere that he

is locked out of

3. What do you think he forgot? His keys! (show my keys)

4. I have lots of keys on my keychain here (show them

what they do)

5. Did you know there is a key that God wants you to have

so you can get into heaven?

6. It’s true, there is only one key to heaven and you know

what it is? Jesus!

7. If you believe that Jesus is God’s Son, that He died on

the cross for you and that He rose again on the third day

you have the key to heaven!

8. That’s awesome isn’t it?
Sermon

READ: John 10:40-42 (Scripture slide)
40 Jesus went back across the Jordan River again to the place where John had been baptizing at an earlier time, and He stayed there. 41 Many came to Him and began to say, “John performed no miraculous sign, but everything John said about this man was true!” 42 And many believed in Jesus there.”
A. Jesus leaves Jerusalem for the last time for one last trip to the

Jordan River area again (see map slide)

1. This was the primary place that John the Baptist had his

ministry

2. If you recall by this time in Jesus' ministry John the

Baptist has already been murdered by Herod

B. John was well respected in this area

1. He had preached with authority

2. So much so that some of the religious leaders thought he

was the Messiah (which he denied)

3. But he never did anything miraculous, unlike Jesus
4. John had testified about Jesus and these people are now

accepting his testimony and flocking to Jesus

READ: Luke 13:22 (Scripture slide)
Then Jesus traveled throughout towns and villages, teaching and making His way toward Jerusalem."
A. Again Jesus was going through these towns in the area for one

last mission trip

1. He would spend about 3 months ministering in this area

of Perea, often called the land 'beyond Jordan' (roughly

Gilead of the OT)

2. While we don't know exactly what year this was, it is

likely around January 0f 30 A.D.

3. What is His message? The fact that the Kingdom of

God is at hand and that people need to turn to Him
B. After leaving this area Jesus would go to Jerusalem for the last

time
1. The ending of which would culminate in His death,

burial and resurrection
2. He roughly has six months left until the cross at this

point

3. Jesus knew this and continued to bring His message, if

only we would be as faithful in sharing the Gospel!
READ: Luke 13:23 (Scripture slide)
Someone asked Him, “Lord, will only a few be saved?” So He said to them”

A. A pointed question

1. This was a common rabbinical question and likely one

that floats around in people's minds today

2. How many will be saved?
3. Is it a lot? Is it a few?
4. Is it a universal plan where everybody get’s coverage

and receives a get out of hell prescription card?

B. Our society thinks they know the answer to this question
1. Why? Because of course Jesus to them is a good ol boy
2. He wants you to be happy and as long as you can claim

that it doesn’t matter how you live

3. Why Jesus isn't a moral compass
4. He's your self-esteem coach that tells you good job

even when you fail, telling you can be all that you want

to be because you have the power within you, blah, blah,

blah, blah

5. He's no judge to the world, he's buddy Jesus
6. And why all of us, dare I say the word, conservative

Christians are all simpletons and haters, daring to call

sin sin….which of course we do because we simply

think we are better than them and not out of real

knowledge about Jesus
7. I mean aren’t we all good people, so good in fact that we

are good enough to get into heaven?

C. That is the gospel that is no gospel, it is the gospel that will get

you smack dab in the middle of hell

1. First off the only one good enough to get to heaven

came from there and ascended back to there

2. I’d have better luck getting to Mars in a hot air balloon

than to get into heaven by my good deeds

3. Let me put it to you this way
a. If you told me that Marv was going to either 1)

win the next Kentucky Derby or 2) work his way

into heaven do you know what I’d do?
b. I’d go buy some spurs and get him fitted for a

saddle after service today

c. An Marv in my eye’s is a great guy
d. But he, nor you, nor I is Jesus great
4. The world doesn't like to think that there are some who

won't make heaven, but its true

a. For some that will be painfully true

b. This is in Scripture to show that we had best ask

ourselves this question
c. That not everybody is going to be leaving this

earth on a fluffy cloud of eternal bliss

d. Some, and more then we expect are going to be

lost because they rejected God’s plan

e. Church, heaven IS exclusive
f. It doesn’t matter what we think, it matters what

Jesus tells us is fact

g. There is no way around the exclusivity of heaven

or of the total allegiance to the One Who opens

and shuts it’s door
D. So you see the most important question this man could have

asked and the one that we need to ask as well is 'Lord, am I

saved?' Have you faced the answer to that question?
READ: Luke 13:24, 25 (Scripture slide)
24 “Exert every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. 25 Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, then you will stand outside and start to knock on the door and beg Him, ‘Lord, let us in!’ But He will answer you, ‘I don’t know where you come from.”
A. 'Exert every effort to enter through the narrow gate'
1. The Greek word used here for exert, is the word that we

get our English word 'agonize',

2. It's the type of anguish that Jesus experienced in the

Garden on the night of His betrayal

3. Paul used if of those who dedicated themselves to

winning the Olympic games, that he compared to

running the race of faith

1 Corinthians 9:24–27 (NET) 24 Do you not know that all the runners in a stadium compete, but only one receives the prize? So run to win. 25 Each competitor must exercise self-control in everything. They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one. 26 So I do not run uncertainly or box like one who hits only air. 27 Instead I subdue my body and make it my slave, so that after preaching to others I myself will not be disqualified.”

a. The Olympic Games are this July 27th till August

12th of this year

b. It's the kind of dedication that those who win

have

c. They push and focus themselves to win a little

medal
d. Should we not exert more zeal in making sure our

souls will be in Christ’s Kingdom?

1. This is what I fear, that many of us do not

take seriously our faith

2. Some make is seem to be too easy, that

one is more committed to Dillon’s for

their fuel rewards than they are to Jesus

for His eternal rewards
3. Being a follower of Jesus is not easy

Luke 9:23 (NET) Then He said to them all, “If anyone wants to become My follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”

Matthew 7:13–14 (NET) 13 “Enter through the narrow gate, because the gate is wide and the way is spacious that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14 But the gate is narrow and the way is difficult that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

Mark 10:24 (NET) The disciples were astonished at these words. But again Jesus said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!”

4. How many of you have seen Saving Private Ryan?

a. Remember when they landed on the beaches of

Normandy and the chaos that ensued? (SLIDE)
b. Imagine for a moment that you were on one of

those transport boats

1. Bombs going off everywhere

2. Bullets are flying

3. And the next thing you know that door in

front of you slaps down into the frothy

foam

4. And you look at you see a narrow

passage to safety

5. How would you strive towards that?

c. That IS the situation for your soul!
d. Are you exerting your every effort to get through

that Narrow Gate, called Christ?

B. Jesus goes on to say 'many, I tell you, will try to enter but will

not be able to'

1. Jesus does not say few will be saved here, but He says

many will indeed be lost

Matthew 22:14 (NET) For many are called, but few are chosen.”

2. Many will try and enter, but can't because they seek to

by means other than the Narrow Door!

3. You can try an endless assortment of things to get into

heaven: legalism, works, other religions, etc, but only

Jesus can get you in

C. And unfortunately for them once the door to heaven is shut, its

shut

1. Once the Master decides to close the door there is not

stopping it from happening
2. There will be no more time to get in nor any way to

open it back up

3. Reminiscent of the days of the flood

Genesis 7:16 (NET) Those that entered were male and female, just as God commanded him. Then the Lord shut him in.”

4. It floors me that we have people in America more

interested in sports teams, political parties, jobs,

whatever it is more than their very own souls, which

when your mortal coil unravels is all that is left of you

5. What we should be focusing on is the One Who can

open or shut the door to the kingdom of Heaven for us
6. If people would simply seek Jesus, He would open that

door for them here and now

Luke 11:10 (NET) For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

7. If you lock Him out of your life now, He will return like

treatment to you and lock you out of His kingdom then

D. Once that door closes the begging begins

1. There will come a day when many who snubbed the

Door will want in and then it will be too late

2. I see this type of attitude even at the credit union on

Saturdays
a. We are open from 9 to 12, every Saturday
b. But without fail there are those who wait till the

last minute and then are upset when we close

c. I’ve had people 5 minutes after we close,

repeatedly ding the button, over and over, but it’s

to no avail, they had their chance and they missed

it
3. You see and the time you have to accept Him is in this

life and there are plenty of opportunities and we have

no excuse to say we didn’t have enough time

4. And as the Good Shepherd, He knows His sheep, and if

you aren't one, you will not be allowed into His fold,

because you belong to another

READ: Luke 13:26-28 (Scripture slide)
26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’ 27 But He will reply, ‘I don’t know where you come from! Go away from Me, all you evildoers!’ 28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves thrown out.”
A. These people saw Jesus, the saw His teaching, yet they never

made Him their Savior

1. Like people today they thought that simply having a

knowledge of Jesus, meant they had a relationship with

Jesus

2. You can know more Scripture than Billy Graham

but if Jesus is not your Lord, you’re not going to be

allowed into His kingdom

3. Jesus will know if He has a relationship with you or not,

everyone else can be fooled, but not Him

1 Corinthians 8:3 (NET) But if someone loves God, he is known by God.”

B. And they will not be simply escorted out, but violently thrown

out

Revelation 21:8 (NET) But to the cowards, unbelievers, detestable persons, murderers, the sexually immoral, and those who practice magic spells, idol worshipers, and all those who lie, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. That is the second death.”

1. I had a friend who I hadn't seen once in a while

a. When he found out I was a Baptist minister he

said, 'Well at least your not one of those crazy

Southern Baptists who preach hell fire and

brimstone'.

b. I’m not kidding, he said that as straight faced as

he could
c. You should have seen the look on his face what I

told him I was one of those Southern Baptist

ministers.

2. I preach ‘hellfire and brimstone’ not because I like

hellfire and brimstone, but because it's in God's Word

and it will be a reality to many today who laugh it off
3. And it will be a reality for you if Jesus isn’t your Savior
READ: Luke 13:29, 30 (Scripture slide)

29 Then people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and take their places at the banquet table in the kingdom of God. 30 But indeed, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

A. The Gospel message is for all people who would respond

B. Jesus' sacrifice is for all people who would come to Him,

regardless of nationality

C. God had promised this to Abraham

Genesis 28:14 (NET) Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west, east, north, and south. All the families of the earth will pronounce blessings on one another using your name and that of your descendants.”

D. You could be a part of this banquet

Revelation 7:9–10 (NET) 9 After these things I looked, and here was an enormous crowd that no one could count, made up of persons from every nation, tribe, people, and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb dressed in long white robes, and with palm branches in their hands. 10 They were shouting out in a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God, to the one seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

Application (slide)

A. If you don't get into the Kingdom of Heaven, it isn't because

you never heard the message, it's because you heard and you

willfully and in stubborn sin rejected the Way in

B. Some people think hell is old fashioned, and it is, it was

fashioned eons ago for the devil and his angels and then for

those who reject God's plan

C. It's a very real and literal place, and you will really go there if

you reject Jesus, He won't send you there, you choose it

D. What do you choose today? What you choose today could

mean where you have chosen to spend forever…..

E. Have you asked the real question 'Lord, am I saved?' and it is the question you need to ask of yourself
