JOB TITLE: Senior Consultant

REPORTS TO: Principal Consultant / Senior Management

DIVISION/DEPT: Safety and Risk

LOCATION: Loughborough / Aberdeen


Role Purpose



To support & lead the technical output of the Safety and Risk Practice through input to, and governance of, the delivery of relevant projects and to support business development activities. Through close working with key internal and external stakeholders, develop new practice offerings as appropriate to the strategy for the business, act as a key interface with customers and provide technical / project leadership within the practice or in support of cross-practice/GLIS consultancy.





Key Accountabilities




    • Delivery of technical consultancy: Undertake specialist technical delivery relating to safety & risk projects and work with Managers / Principal Consultants in providing technical governance in areas of expertise as required

    • Business / Proposal development: Identify, develop and close qualified opportunities with customers and accounts in conjunction with relevant Consultants and Managers, Account Managers, Sales Managers, other Heads of Practices and appropriate GLIS regional representatives.

    • Product development: Develop new practice offerings as appropriate to the strategy for the Safety & Risk business.

    • Project management: Lead, deliver and technically review (as appropriate) projects within the Safety & Risk Practice or across a number of Practices. Support the Head of Practice to deliver business targets.

    • Customer relationships: Build and manage strong customer relationships and establish GLIS as a ‘Trusted Advisor’ in relation to those services we can offer which meet the accounts’/customers’ needs. Establish GLIS as a reputable provider of solutions to customers.

    • Positioning: By developing a clear understanding of our customers’ current and emerging business needs, ensure that our key capabilities / offerings and practice positioning are understood and valued by our customers, accounts and internal stakeholders (Principal Consultants, Sales Managers, Account Managers, Heads of Practice and other Senior Consultants).

    • People: Work closely and collaboratively with Principal and Senior Consultants, Managers, Sales & Account Managers and the Head of Practice to deliver the agreed targets for the Practice. Provide technical advice and support to the practice.

    • Processes: Attend conferences that drive the GLIS business and present papers as appropriate.

    • Reporting: Produce effective internal reports on a regular basis, as required.






Typical Outputs (reporting requirements etc)

  • As a recognised leader / technical specialist, in conjunction with others as appropriate, provide expert advice to customers, project teams (including non-UK based) and other parts of GLIS in the broad safety & risk technical area

    • To provide specialist advice to customers, either as a project resource, or directly for fee income or as part of the account management and sales activities

    • To acts as a key contact point for the UK region/GLIS relating to safety & integrity related business development and project delivery

    • Support project delivery through project management, authoring technical review and issue of reports. Presenting results, conclusions and recommendations from safety & risk consultancy work, as appropriate to our customers.




  • Work with the Safety & Risk management team to:

    • Secure safety & integrity consultancy work for the S&R team through business development activities including engagement with potential and existing clients

    • Prepare and/or review proposals and scopes of work for potential consultancy opportunities

    • Promote the capabilities of GLIS through attendance and presentation at industry events, conferences etc. as appropriate to the business




  • Prepare and/or review cost estimates for consultancy projects




  • Provide general technical support and guidance to the S&R team and its management as requested

    • Provide staff development, training and coaching to relevant GLIS staff through technical support and guidance during project development and delivery

    • Prepare and/or review consultancy reports and documentation




  • Support Managers in revenue generation & project delivery through identification of potential out-of-scope activities on consultancy projects




  • Perform technical and business development tasks as required and assigned by line management

  • Project management skills – ability to proactively plan and co-ordinate key activities

  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to write clear and concise reports/documents




  • Exceptional technical knowledge gained by operating in the oil/gas or other relevant industry

  • Degree qualified in Engineering or relevant Scientific discipline - Ideally Chartered Engineer Status

  • Self motivated and strong record of achievement

  • Demonstrated business development skills - the capability to bring customer negotiations to a productive closure
