How to Convert X’pert Pole Figure Files into POPLA Format

(And How to Make PHILCONV Work on Windows XP)

When a pole figure is acquired from an X’Pert Pro diffractometer the resulting data file has the .xrdml file extension. xrdml is a Panalytical format that can only be used by Panalytical software such as X’Pert Texture. (Panalytical manufactures the X’Pert and was formerly called Philips Analytical. Some people still refer to X’Pert files as Philips files.) These instructions show how to convert .xrdml files into .raw files which can be used in the POPLA texture analysis software. The POPLA program is easily found on the internet.

Part 1: Convert .xrdml into .rw1


  1. Open the .xrdml files in the X’Pert Data Viewer program.

  2. Use the Convert option under the File menu to convert the pole figure data files into .rw1 files.

  3. The Convert option is also used to convert pole figure background measurements into .cor files. However, Convert does not work if pole figure files and background files are open at the same time.


Part 2: How to make the PHILCONV program work on Windows XP
PHILCONV is an old Philips program that converts .rw1 files into POPLA format.

If PHILCONV is working on your computer you may skip this section.

PHILCONV is an MS-DOS program that will not work on the DOS system provided within Windows XP. PHILCONV is available from Panalytical.


  1. Download the DOSBox software which is easily found on the internet.

  2. Create a folder that DOSBox will use as a C: drive.

For example, create the folder whose path is C:\DOSBOX_C

DO NOT USE THE C: DRIVE AS THE DOSBOX C: DRIVE!



  1. Find the DOSBox file named “dosbox.conf” and open it in Notepad.

  2. Scroll to the bottom, add the following lines under [autoexec], and save:

mount C "C:\DOSBOX_C"

C:

set temp=c:\temp



  1. Download PHILCONV and move all of its files into the DOSBOX_C folder.

  2. Put the .rw1 and .cor files to be converted into a folder with a simple name like PFDATA and move that folder into the DOSBOX_C folder.

  3. Start the DOSBox program.

  4. Navigate to the directory containing PHILCONV.EXE and enter PHILCONV



Part 3: Convert .rw1 into .raw
A single .rwl file contains data for one pole figure.

PHILCONV combines several .rwl files and reformats it all into one .raw file.

A .raw file is called a POPLA file and contains all the pole figures for one sample.

POPLA files are text files that can be easily checked and edited.


After starting the PHILCONV program:


  1. Press any key to continue.

  2. Select System preparation

Enter the path of the source directory (the folder containing .rw1 files).

Example: C:\PFDATA

Enter the path of the destination directory (the folder for output files).

It can be the same as source directory.

Example: C:\PFDATA

Press Esc



  1. Select Tex Conversion.

Select 1 Add single pole figures for ODF

Press F5=show names

Highlight a file and press F1=select

Move to the next line (use down arrow).

Repeat with F5, F1, etc. until all files for one sample are entered.

Enter a name on the output file line (8 characters or less).

Press F1=Start Conversion

Press Esc



  1. Select 4 Tex (RWD) to Popla (RAW)

Highlight an .rwd file and press F1=Convert to POPLA

Press Esc



  1. Select 5 Tex (COR) to POPLA (DFB)

Highlight a .cor file and press F1=Convert to POPLA

Press Esc



  1. Press Esc=main menu

  2. Select X eXit from PC-Conversion

  3. Enter exit to close DOS or DOSBox.

  4. The POPLA .raw and .dfb files are now located the PFDATA folder. If using DOSBox, the PFDATA folder will be found within the DOSBOX_C folder.


Part 4: Fix the .raw text file
Some manual changes must be made to the .raw file.


  1. Open a .raw file in Notepad.

  2. The first two lines look something like the following

FLNAME 1/08/07

111 5.0 85.0 5.0360.0 0 1 2 1 3 80 1
Add a space to the front of the second line.

Delete a space before the first 5.0 to maintain the other character positions.

Change the first 0 after 360.0 to a 1

The result should look like the following.


FLNAME 1/08/07

111 5.0 85.0 5.0360.0 1 1 2 1 3 80 1




  1. Scroll down and make this change for every data set in the .raw file.

  2. Scroll to the end and place the cursor at the very end of the file. Enter a blank line by using the “return” key between the last row of numbers and the arrow at the very end of the file. DO NOT delete the arrow. Delete back to the last digit (do not delete the digit) and press the return key. The return key is the Enter key with the arrow on it. It is NOT the Enter key next to the number pad. Some EOF errors in POPLA are caused by not having a carriage return at the end of the file.

  3. Save the file.

  4. Open the .raw file in POPLA. If you continue to have problems try using two instances of Notepad to directly compare the file with a working .raw file. Use a font that maintains the same spacing for all characters. If one character or space is out of position the file may not work. Look for an example file in the POPLA directories. If still no luck, try replacing the headers of the problem file with the headers from a working file. Sometimes hidden characters cause problems. You could also try pasting a set of intensity data over the data of a working file. Sometimes there are problems with the space between data sets.

  5. Don’t worry if the intensity values are lower than the actual values. POPLA normalizes the data so that the highest intensity value is 9999. The second to last number in the second line of the .raw file is the scaling factor. 100 means the data has not been normalized.

  6. To change the orientation convention you will have to alter some of the values in the 1 1 2 1 3 part of the second line. See the POPLA manual for details.


Part 5: Fix the .raw text file

    1. Open the first .dfb file that will be associated with the first pole figure in the .raw file, e.g., 111.dfb if the 111 pole figure is the first data set in .raw file. Save this file with the same name as the samplename.raw file, but with a .dfb extension.

    2. Then open the second .dfb file, e.g., 200.dfb. Copy the correction intensities, starting with the line that starts with 200 and copy to the end of the file (CTRL C) onto the clipboard. Do not copy the arrow.

    3. Open samplename.dfb file. Copy the content of the clipboard between the data set for 111 and the arrow at the end of the file. Do not leave a blank line.

    4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the third .dfb file, e.g., 220.dfb.

    5. The file samplename.dfb now has all three correction files in one.

    6. Note that the last line in the file is an arrow and that there is NO blank line between the last line of numbers and the arrow. (This is different from the .raw file).

Drag the samplename.raw and samplename.dfb files into the folder named X so that PopLA will be able to access them and process them.


Put the X folder itself into the DOSBOX folder so that you will be able to run PopLA.
