Healey Dell ~ Wildflower Project ~ 2010/12

Aims of the Project:
The aim of this project is to increase the biodiversity within Healey Dell Nature Reserve by creating areas of native wildflowers which will benefit local insect populations, in particular pollinating species such as bees, butterflies & moths.
Areas:
The three areas to be used for this project are:
1. Broadley Station Platforms (460m2 approx)

Both platforms are currently overgrown with birch

and willow scrub with some wildflower on the southern platform including hawkweed, scabious, bellflower, orchid and, previously, eye-bright.

2. Broadley Bridge (840m2 approx) 3. Broadley Mill Sidings (1800m2 approx)

This area is dominated by Himalayan balsam (approx 90% cover) & tussock grass with some valerian.

The larger, triangular, section of this area, whilst dominated by grasses, includes common vetch, meadow vetchling, clover & nettle. The smaller, rectangular area has recently been disturbed and includes Himalayan balsam and butterbur which grows abundantly adjacent to this area.

Schools & Volunteers:
Volunteers will be welcome to participate in the creation and maintenance of these areas, with particular emphasis on clearing scrub from the Station Platforms.

Once each area has been established, schools will be invited to help create ‘insect houses’ within each site which will encourage a number of different invertebrates to hibernate within the site.

Schools will also be encouraged to adopt these areas as teaching resources.
