Standard trip to southern Tunisia and Sahara offered in hotel – transport by bus and jeeps.

I go birding every morning (6.30-12.30) when the weather was quite pleasant, hot but cool windy. I observed birds in following places:




  • Hammam–Sousse (the edge of large city Sousse) – small fields, olive orchards, wadi El Hammam, sea shore, El Kantaoui Golf Course






  • Sousse – city

  • Port el Kantaoui

  • S
    ebkhet Halk en Menzel – salt lake (12 km north from Hammam–Sousse)

  • Fish ponds near Sebkhet Halk en Menzel

    esert - steppe north from Hergla and rubbish-dump



  • Lake Errmal and road from Bou Ficha

uring standard trip to southern Tunisia: coloseum in El Jem, Mahres –short stop at the gulf of Gabes, Matmata, Zaafrane – oasis, El Faouar – edge of sandy desert, Degache – oasis, mountain oasis: Temerza i Chebika.

Shelduck Tadorna tadorna – 1 pair with chicks, 1 disquieted pair at the eastern bank of Sebkhet Halk en Menzel

Marbled Duck Marmaronetta angustirostris – 5 ind. at lake Errmal

Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca – 4 ind. at lake Errmal

Barbary Partridge Alectoris barbara – 5 ind. on steppe-desert north from Hergla

Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis – 2 families at small ponds on golf club Port El Kantaoui, few pair at Lake Errmal

Great Grebe Podiceps cristatus – pairs with youngs at Lake Errmal

Cory Sherwater Calonectris diomedea 4–5 ind. over sea horizon during strong eastern wind

Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo – 1 imm. at fish ponds near Sebkhet Halk en Menzel

Squacco Heron Ardeola ralloides 1 ad. – Lake Errmal

White Stork Ciconia ciconia – 3 ind. flying over steppe near Enfida

Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia – ca 40 ind. at Lake Sebkhet Halk en Menzel

Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus – ca 1000 ind. in the middle of lake Sebkhet Halk en Menzel, ca 200 ind. at salinas around the airport in Monastir (observed from airport hall)

Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus – 1 ad. on the power pylon near road Degache -Tamerza

Booted Eagle Hieraaetus pennatus – 1 ad. near Lake Errmal

Kestrel Falco tinnunculus – few birds in Hammam–Sousse

Moorhen Gallinula chloropus – few territorial voices in dense tamarix in the wadi El Hammam w Hammam–Sousse

Coot Fulica atra – 2000–3000 ind. at Lake Errmal

Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus – 1 ind. at muddy sea shore in Mahres



Stilt Himantopus himantopus – probably breeding at shallow fresh water pool close to rubbish-dump near Hergla, ca 50 ind. disquieted in fly

 



Avoset Recurvirostra avosetta – breeding at Sebkhet Halk en Menzel, disquieted adults and chicks, total about 1000 ind.

 



Stone Curlew Burhinus oedicnemus – 3-4 ind. on steppe-desert north from Hergla, probably breeding there, 1 ind. flying close to Lake Halk en Menzel

Collared Pratincole Glareola pratincola – up to 5 ad. on steppe-desert north from Hergla and around Sebkhet Halk en Menzel, 1 juv. at fresh-water poll close to rubbish-dump near Hergla

Little Ringed Plover Charadrius dubius – up to 4 ind. in the wadi El Hammam



Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus – hundreds individuals at Sebkhet Halk en Menzel, totally even about 1000 birds

Ruff Philomachus pugnax – 1 male ad. at muddy sea shore in Mahres

Curlew Numenius arquata – 2 ind. at Sebkhet Halk en Menzel

Redshank Tringa totanus – ca 10 ing. disquieted at muddy sea shore in Mahres, up to 20 ind. at Sebkhet Halk en Menzel

Greenshank Tringa nebularia – 4 ind. at Sebkhet Halk en Menzel

Wood Sandpiper Tringa glareola ca 30 ind. at shallow fresh water pool close to rubbish-dump near Hergla

Mediterranean Gull Larus melanocephalus – 1 ind. (2nd cal. year) at fish ponds near Sebkhet Halk en Menzel  

Slender-billed Gull Larus genei – ca 1500 ind. adult and juvenile at Sebkhet Halk en Menzel and at fish ponds

Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscus intermedius – 1 ad. in the flock of resting Yellow-legged Gulls on the steppe-desert north from Hergla

Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis – ca 250 ind. on the island at Sebkhet Halk en Menzel – probably breed there, ca 300 ind. on the steppe-desert north from Hergla



Gull-billed Tern Sterna nilotica – disquieted birds at Sebkhet Halk en Menzel – probably several pairs breed there, 20 ad. and 1 juv over rubbish-dump near Hergla, 1 ad. at Lake Errmal

 

Common Tern Sterna hirundo – few birds at Sebkhet Halk en Menzel

 

Little Tern Sterna albifrons – a hundreds birds adult and young at Sebkhet Halk en Menzel

 

Collared Dove Streptopelia decaocto – 1 male singing in the old town of Sousse



Turtle Dove Streptopelia turtur – few pairs on the edge of desert in El Faouar

Laughing Dove Streptopelia senegalensispresent almost everywhere



Little Owl Athene noctua – pair near hole in Hammam–Sousse, 1 ind. near Halk en Menzel

 

Swift Apus apus – common in Hammam–Sousse



Pallid Swift Apus pallidus – few breeding pairs in amphitheatre in El Jem, thousands birds above the city of Sousse at evening flying, few birds feeding at Sebkhet Halk en Menzel

Alpine Swift Apus melba – 1 pair in Tamerza

Little Swift Apus affinis – 4–5 ind. from far in Tamerza

Bee-eater Merops apiaster – 18 ind. on the edge of golf club in Port El Kantaoui

Hoopoe Upupa epops – few birds on the edge of city

Desert Lark Ammomanes deserti – 1 ind. in Chebika oasis

Lesser Short-toed Lark Calandrella rufescens – 4 ind. on the bottom Sebkhet Halk en Menzel

Crested Lark Galerida cristata – present almost everywhere

Swallow Hirundo rustica – present almost everywhere

House Martin Delichon urbicum – few birds on the edge of Hammam–Sousse

Tawny Pipit Anthus campestris – 1 pair on steppe north from Hergla

Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin Cercotrichas galactotes – 1 pair feeding youngs in Zaafrane, few singing birds close to the road from Bu Ficha to Lake Errmal

White-crowned Wheatear Oenanthe leucopyga – 1 male in Tamerza and Chebika oasis

Black Wheatear Oenanthe leucura – 1 male seen from the bus close to the road Matmata – Douz

Blackbird Turdus merula – present almost everywhere on the edge of city

Zitting Cisticola Cisticola juncidis – few singing birds in the wadi El Hammam

Great Reed Warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus – 1 singing male in tamarisks at Lake Errmal

Western Olivaceous Warbler Hippolais opaca – few singing birds in the wadi El Hammam belong probably to this new split species from Hippolais pallida

Melodious Warbler Hippolais polyglotta – 1 singing male on the edge of date palm plantation in Zaafrane

Sardinian Warbler Sylvia melanocephala – few birds in bushes on the edge of Hammam–Sousse and in the village close to the Sebkhet Halk en Menzel

Spotted Flycatcher Muscicapa striata – few birds in bushes around Hammam–Sousse

Fulvous Babbler Turdoides fulva – 1 bird on the edge of desert in El Faouarm, and before the dusk in the same place a pair on the date palms

African Blue Tit Parus teneriffae ultramarinus – 1 male in Port El Kantaoui, 2 youngs in bushes near Halk en Menzel

present almost everywhere

L.m.algeriensis L.m.elegans

 

Woodchat Shrike Lanius senator – few pairs with youngs on the edge of eucalyptus bushes north from Hergla



Brow-necked Raven Corvus ruficollis – ca 10 ind. flying over the desert near El Faouar

Spotless Starling Sturnus unicolor – present almost everywhere around cities

Spanish Sparrow Passer hispaniolensis – present almost everywhere around buildings

Serin Serinus serinus – few times in flocks up to 30 ind.

Greenfinch Carduleis chloris – few birds at the edge of buildings

House Bunting Emberiza sahari – seen in Matmata, common in Degache where I found the nest on the house, few birds very close in Chebika oasis
