From Wikipedia: Nigella Sativa seed is known variously as kalonji कलौंजी or कलोंजी (Hindi), kezah קצח (Hebrew), charnushka (Russian), çörek otu (Turkish), habbah Albarakah, حبه البركة (literally seeds of blessing Arabic) or siyah daneh سیاه‌دانه (Persian). In English it is called fennel flower, black caraway, nutmeg flower, Roman coriander. Other names used, sometimes misleadingly, are onion seed and black sesame (both of which are similar-looking but unrelated). It is sometimes called the Black Cumin Seed, however this does not resemble the Black Cumin which the Indians refer to as Jeera/Zeera. The most common English name for the Blessed Seed is Black Seed.

An Ancient Tradition


The use of Black Seed as a healing herb has been traced back more than 3000 years to the Assyrians and ancient Egypt. The oil pressed from Black Seed was known as the "Pharaohs’ Oil" for it was the chosen treatment for numerous ailments and infections. The use of Black Seed soon spread to other parts of Africa and the Middle East and was well known by the sixth century when the Prophet Muhammad SAW said "Hold on to the use of Black Seed for it has a remedy for every illness except death".  Black Seed is the Medicine of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Black Seed has been an essential ingredient in Eastern medicine as well, especially Ayurveda. In more recent times, Black Seed has been recommended as a herbal medicine by the World Health Organization, and ongoing scientific research in the West is continuously confirming the truth behind the superior qualities of Black Seed.
Kalonji seed or Nigella Sativa has been traditionally used for a variety of conditions and treatments related to respiratory health, stomach and intestinal health, kidney and liver function, circulatory and immune system, Asthma, Bronchitis, Rheumatism and related inflammatory diseases, to improve digestion and to fight parasitic infections.. This oil has also been used to treat skin conditions such as eczema, boils and to treat cold symptoms. treat bronchitis and coughs. Also it helps stimulate excretion of urine, dissolve wind, quell colic pain, expel worms, benefits some skin allergies and stimulate menstrual period. If you add a few drops to your coffee or tea it can help calm the nervous system, dry cough, asthma, and bronchial respiratory complaints. If you take the Black Seed oil unmixed or undiluted it can produce gripe and irritate the digestive system. The Black Seed also acts as an expectorant.
The protective and healing powers of Black Seed are real, and they do not seem so impossible once we learn that they all stem mainly from Black Seed’s ability to stabilize and strengthen the body’s immune system.

NUTRITIONAL COMPONENTS - A Modern Rediscovery:

In the last fifty years, Black Seed has been the subject of over two hundred university studies and research papers. The oil extracted from Black Seed has a rich composition of more than 100 compounds including essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, comprised of approximately 21% protein, 38% carbohydrates, and 35% plant fats and oils. The active ingredients of Black Seed are nigellone, thymoquinone, and essential oils. Other ingredients include linolic acid, oleic acid, calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, magnesium, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin B2, Niacin, & Vitamin C. Black Seed also contains compounds that are capable of killing germs. Chemical analysis of the seed also proved that it contains carotene which is converted in the liver into vitamin A, this useful vitamin is well known for its anti-cancer activity. Further analysis proved that the Seed contains potent sexual hormones, stimulants, digestive enzymes, antacids, sedatives and other useful compounds.


In related studies, scientists have found that Black Seed stimulates bone marrow and immune cell formation, protects the body against viruses, destroys tumor cells and inhibits infection. Work done at various cancer research institutes have also indicated that Black Seed holds "remarkable promise for clinical use in cancer treatment". Other clinical research has shown that the use of Black Seed significantly improves the T-cell ratio and at the same time enhances the natural killer cell activity. Thus Black Seed has much potential in the treatment of immune-deficiency diseases like cancer and AIDS.
Black seed is a safe and effective herb that can be used by almost anyone. No irritations or side effects are caused when the right dose is correctly taken. Its benefits are obtained through consistent use, the effects are medium to long term. Black seed can be used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus or diabetes caused by an allergy, but it is recommended that the treatment be supervised because Black Seed lowers blood sugar levels. Black Seed should not be taken by pregnant women. There is also general misunderstanding that Black Seed is hot in nature and will cause excessive heat in the body. This is wrong as Black Seed is natural and not mixed with any chemicals. There is, therefore, no side effects. Side Effects are possible only if contaminated oil or wrong nature of seeds are taken considering it as original Black Seed. Therefore, extra care should be taken to get reliable and actual Black Seed, preferably organic.
Prevention is Better than Cure

Constant stress, psychological strain, environmental toxins, lack of sleep or exercise and an unbalanced diet are almost expected conditions of life in modern society.


Yet these are all factors which lead to a weakened immune system. The immune system and the digestive system are not only the main areas for the body’s defenses but they are also the points where many health disorders originate. A teaspoon of Black Seed oil mixed with honey, taken with water, hot or cold drink, will be most effective as everyday routine.
Some of the Suggested Medication or usage of Black Seed Oil is as follows:
For Cough, Asthma or Respiratory Problems: Apply Black Seed oil to the chest and back.

Mix a teaspoon of Black Seed oil in Boiling water and inhale the vapor twice a day.


Take half a teaspoon of Black Seed Oil daily in the morning.
Cystic Fibrosis: Massage the chest with Black Seed oil, and drink a mixture of one teaspoon Black Seed oil with a teaspoon pure honey, morning afternoon and evening.


Diabetes: In one cup of Black Tea (Decoction), mix half tea spoon Black Seed oil and drink in the morning and before going to bed. Check Sugar level – stop the dosage if sugar levels are normal.


Diarrhea: Mix a teaspoon of Black Seed oil with a cup of yoghurt. Drink the mixture twice a day until symptoms disappear.
Dry Cough: A teaspoon of Black Seed oil should be mixed in coffee and taken twice a day. Rub the chest and back with Black Seed oil.


Eye disease & impaired vision: Rub the eyelids and the sides of the eye orbits half an hour before going to bed with Black Seed oil. A tablespoon of the oil should also be drunk with a cup of carrot juice. Results should be apparent in one month..


Facial paralysis & tetanus: Inhaling the vapour of Black Seed oil and hot water can help against facial paralysis and tetanus, and eliminates their causes.
Common Cold, Flu & nasal congestion: Placing three to four drops of Black Seed oil in each nostril relieves nasal congestion and head cold distress.
Gall Stones & Kidney Stones: Prepare a formulation of 250g of ground Black Seed & 250g pure honey, stir thoroughly before use. Take two tablespoons of this formulation and mix thoroughly with half a cup of hot water. Finally add one teaspoon of Black Seed oil. This mixture is to be taken every morning before consuming any food.


Backache & other kinds of Rheumatism: Mildly heat a small amount of Black Seed oil and then stroke the rheumatic area intensely. A teaspoon of oil should also be drunk three times daily.
For Hypertension: Take half teaspoon of Black Seed oil with any hot drink at any time. Take 2 lobes of garlic on empty stomach. Apply Black Seed oil to your whole body and expose it to the sun every three days, continue the treatment for a month.
For Heart complaints & Constriction of Veins: Take half teaspoon of Black Seed oil mixed with any hot drink daily in the mornings, this will liquefy the fats and widen the veins and arteries.
For Headache and Ear ache: Apply Black Seed oil to the forehead, sides of face adjacent to the ears and behind the ears. Take half teaspoon of Black Seed Oil and continue for about 3 days.
For Toothache: Mix a half teaspoon of Black Seed oil with warm water and gargle the mouth and apply oil on the affected tooth, it will alleviate pain quickly.
Undoubtedly Black Seed is a blessed plant for the human being with unlimited benefits – some of which have not yet been tapped
