In 1999, the English Language Center faculty developed the first Koç University Newcomers’ Guide. Last summer, a Task Force, representing faculty and family members from all Koç University faculties and a senior representative of the University's administration, got together to develop this new Guide.
I first want to thank the Task Force as a whole. Its effort -- a model of collaboration, team work, and commitment to the University community – has been a strong step forward in building the University we want and which we own. Each member of the group gave many, many hours of time over last summer to this project. The group’s understanding of what kinds of information a newcomer really needs and its determination to provide this information -- in a readable and useful form -- are keys to the success of the project. This summer, members of the Task Force took the time to update the Guide.
Specifically, I would like to thank, Hilary Haas Kuriş, Catherine Somer, Janice Arsan, Hanife Sözer, Elsie Vance Aşkar and Mehmet Celayir, who talked with other faculty and families about what was necessary in such a Guide, researched, wrote and edited the sections. Mehmet Celayir, the General Secretary of the University, served as the critical link between the Task Force and the University. Ulviye Arkun, Mine Yurtsever, and Serpil Soner made important contributions through their useful insights, background information on Turkey and their support.

This year, I would specifically like to thank Editor in Chief, Hilary Haas Kuriş for her tireless efforts. She has given many hours through her organizational and writing skills to the project.
I would also like to thank this year’s contributors Janice Arsan, Betsy Breckenridge, Jill Cargile, Jacob Chizzo and Elsie Vance-Aşkar, and readers, Barbara Batra, Heather Drake, Cletus Gassman, Kris Millecam, Jami Milliron, and Nihan Selçuk. From the university side, Provost Yaman Arkun and General Secretary Mehmet Celayir as well as his secretary Zeynep Neyza Akcabay provided critical supporting guidance for this ongoing project. The continued dedication of these individuals and so many others by giving their time and advice to update the Guide is greatly appreciated.

Counters located in every apartment measure the consumption of electricity and gas each month (a separate counter measures the consumption in jointly used areas such as the entryway). Bills are prepared by the technical office in accordance with the reading of the counters on the 20th of every month. The amount is deducted from your paycheck at the end of every month 112

Telephone Bills: For the residence and office telephones, telephone bills are prepared by the CIT office and posted online so that you can mark off business related calls. CIT sends an e-mail message to announce when your calls are posted online. The amount you owe is deducted from your paycheck at the end of every month. 112

Arnavutköy Residences: The tenants are responsible for paying their own water, electricity and telephone bills directly to the relevant companies. The technical office will inform the Comptroller’s Office about the heating and hot water bills every month and these expenses will be automatically deducted from the tenant’s salary. 112
