Renah Shaw second daughter and forth child of Joseph Shaw was born on January 7, 1804 and was married to Milton Lake on February 22, 1825 by John Welsh Justice of the Peace. They had 7 children who were Eliza William, John, Sarah, Marshall, Joseph and America. Renah Lake Died December 24, 1847. All the children lived to be grown, but Eliza and Marshall died single. The others all married and had families with children. William died in Texas at the close of the civil war and left a widow and children in Rusk County. John was living 18 miles East of Portland, Oregon in the foothills of Mount Hood and has a wife and several children. Sarah, married to Luzerne Besser, emigrated overland to Portland, Oregon in May 1852 and died on July 23, 1896 leaving a husband and two children, Mary and William. The former are married to Mr. Allard, a prosperous business man in Portland. Joseph has a wife and grown daughter and lives four miles South of Marshall at what was called the "Grand Turn". America was a widow McKeen and lives in Collinsville, Illinois, 10 miles East of St. Louis. She has two single sons living with her. Her Husband Nineveh McKeen served as a 1st Lieutenant, in the 21st Illinois and was one of the 12 that tunneled out of Libby in Richmond, Virginia, in February 1864 and died in December 1890 in the employ of the Vandalia Rail Road as stock shipping agent in East St. Louis, Illinois. Milton Lake married a second wife Mrs. Nancy Donaldson in April 1849 and they had four sons and one daughter. The oldest son and the daughter was dead. Mr. Lake died in 1872 and his wife not long after, both are buried in the Walnut Prairie cemetery.
James Shaw the third son fifth child of Joseph was born on January 13, 1805 and married Sinai Sharp February 20, 1829 by Justin Harlan Justice of the Peace and lived on a farm adjoining his father's till the Black Hawk was come on, and then enlisted in Captain Royal A. Nott's Clark County company of Mounted Militia and faithfully served to the end of the war and was in the battle in which the Indians were defeated and routed.
In June 1833 he started with a flat-boat load of corn to New Orleans and sold his boat and load at Golconda, Illinois on account of the of the prevalence of the Cholera along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. He and his crew started to return overland fearing to return by the rivers on streamers, and at Equality was taken sick with the Cholera and after a short illness died at Golconda, Illinois, and was buried there.
In February 1834, his father started with a two horse wagon to bring his remains home for burial, but on account of high waters had to abandon the trip. He left a widow and three children. John the second child died the following October 1835 near two years of age. The oldest child now Mrs. Jane Vance was living in Paris, Illinois, a widow. James the third child was now living in Vincennes, Indiana and was a bookkeeper in a large milling establishment, was married and has a large family. Ought to have said Mrs. Vance has only one daughter.
John the fourth son and sixth child of Joseph Shaw, born on January 11, 1808, died in infancy.
Gilead Shaw fifth son and seventh child of Joseph Shaw was born on June 15, 1817 in Knox County, Indiana. His education started at the subscription school of Walnut Prairie, and later secured the best general and business training available in Jacksonville at that time. He married Miss Mary W. Drake on September 16, 1841 by the Reverend Ernustus W. Thayer a Presbyterian Minister. He was the only child of Joseph Shaw married by a Minister. Mary was the sister of Maria Drake who married Burns Archer, a nephew of Gilead Shaw and Virgina Drake who married Albert Shaw, a half uncle of Gilead Shaw. Mr. Thayer was still living in Springfield, Illinois at the age of 88 years, the writer having recently received a letter from him.
Gilead lived with his father till April 1846 then moved to Marshall and engaged in mercantile business with Dr. F. R. Payne who had married one of his nieces. Sometime in 1854 he with two partners took a contract to clear, grade and bridge a division of Wabash Valley Rail Road form Paris to Hutsonville, Illinois, and did all he could on their contract without much aid from the Company or his partners; and finally brought suit against the Company for the work done; getting judgment and damages for near $13,000. This amount did not begin to pay out his Liabilities and consequently in the end was left bankrupt. In September 1861 he enlisted in St. Louis in Birge's the 65th Regiment of Sharp Shooters, afterward numbered the 66th Regiment Illinois Volunteers. He later served as clerk under General Ore after the battle of Pittsburgh Landing. He was in the service till the Spring of 1864, came home from the army far gone with the consumption and died. He was a man of a kind and generous nature and did much for the cause of education and church building in Marshall, Illinois. He left a widow and two sons.
Edward was born July 26, 1842 and went into the United States Army as a private in Company F. 30th Illinois Volunteers, at the end of two years re-enlisted and served to the end of the war. In November 14, 1872 was married to Clara Carter. They had a son and daughter Camilla who married Vern Cole and lived in Marshall. In November 1877 he was elected Superintendent of Schools for Clark for a term of four years.
Alphonso, second son of Gilead Shaw was born November 27, 1846 and was married September 1873, to Miss Nancy D. Macoskey of Young's Station, 7 miles South of Terre Haute, Indiana and lived in Terre Haute, Indiana, they had three children. Minnie married Emil Stang of Indianapolis, Indiana. John married Mollie Bernie and lived in Terre Haute, Indiana, they had two sons John G. and Spencer B. Rochford married Fannie Laws and lived in Terre Haute, Indiana. Alphonso was for years the manager of the Terre Haute House and later he and a partner ran the Sherman House in Indianapolis.
Nancy Shaw (called Agnes by the family) third daughter seventh child of Joseph Shaw was born on January 18, 1811. She married Stephen Archer on February 21, 1828 by Justin Harlan Justice of the Peace. They had a large family of children who were as follows; Burns, William, Jane, Joseph, Eliza, Josephine, Samuel, Charles, James, Lyman, Mary, Elizabeth, and Clay.
Stephen Archer was a sargent in Captain Royal A. Nott's Clark County company, 1st Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 3ed Army. The company had first been commanded by William B. Archer, Stephen's older brother.
Burns and Mrs. Jane Vance were the only ones living at the time of the original writing. Burns Archer was born on July 25, 1820, son of Stephen and Nancy (Shaw) Archer. He married Miss. Maria Drake on November 6, 1851 was born on September 20, 1827 She was the sister of Virgina Drake who married his half cousin Albert Shaw and Mary W. Drake who married his Uncle Gilead Shaw. There children were; Edgar and Emma were born February 18, 1853; Cora was born June 8, 1855. Edgar and Cora Archer died in infancy. Emma was married to Augustus Markel of Marshall on December 1, 1875. His wife Maria drake died on July 27, 1855 and he remarried. He was living with his daughter Emma Markle in Danville, Illinois.
Jane Vance who was a widow living in Honston, Custer County, Idaho with five children near and with her. Joseph and James died in infancy. Samuel, Charles and Clay all died single men. William Archer and his wife emigrated to Florida in 1881 or 1882, and died and are buried there. They left two girls, the oldest was single and lived in New York City, the other was married and living in Chicago. Mary married Frank Miller and are both dead, and left three boys two grown and the oldest was married. Lyman Archer is dead, and left one son the only one of the family bearing the Archer name. Lyman's son was a promising young lawyer, living in Tacoma, Washington and held a government position as emigrant inspector on the Puget Sound. Elizabeth Archer married Randall Day and died in Terre Haute and was buried in Marshall cemetery January 22, 1893 and left five children one girl and four boys. Nancy Archer died August 25, 1868 and Stephen Archer July 18, 1887. Some 7 or 8 years before his death he married the widow of David Thompson living 8 miles East of Marshall in Wabash Township and left her a widow and was buried in Marshall Cemetery beside his first wife.
Sarah Shaw the forth daughter and eight child of Joseph Shaw was born September 18, 1812. She was married to Bushrod Martin of Park County Indiana on March 5, 1833 by Justin Harlan Justice of the Peace and after their marriage took up their residence in Park County near 10 miles East of Rockville. They had 10 children and of this number five were still living at the time of the original writing. They are: - Bushrod; 59, Josephine; 57, George; 54, Simon; 51 Alonzo; 49 years old. Those dead are: - John; 21, Charles; 1 1/2, Gilead; 30, Sarah; 56, years old. Sarah (Shaw) Martin died April 9, 1880 and Bushrod Martin died on January 4, 1880. Bushrod was just four days older than our distinguished President Abraham Lincoln.
John Martin, the oldest son, died October 23, 1854, died in Marshall, Illinois, was brought home and buried in Park County. Stephen, next to the oldest child, enlisted in 71st Regiment Illinois Volunteers, later the 6th Calvary, August 18, 1862 and was mustered out June 17, 1865. Late in the 1860's went west and had not been heard from but once soon after he left. Stephen was married October 20, 1859 and had seven children, five daughters, all lived and were married, two sons, both died. Gilead was married January 2, 1859, had four daughters, all dead but one, the youngest. Sarah was married twice, from the first marriage March 10, 1859 had one daughter, still living. Josephine was married September 11, 1864, has four children, three daughters and one boy, one daughter dead. She was now a widow and lives on a farm with the youngest and single daughter; the others are married and living in the neighborhood. George enlisted March 30, 1863 in the 21st Regiment Illinois Volunteers and was mustered out January 13, 1866. Married December 18, 1867 and has five children, two daughters and three sons, of which one the oldest son was dead, both daughters married. George lives on a farm in Benton County, Missouri. Alonzo attended lectures and graduated from the college of Physician and Surgeons, Keokuk, Iowa, in 1878, and has practiced the profession successfully at Bellmore, Indiana ever since his marriage January 6, 1881 and has two children, both girls, Blanche the eldest died when five years old. Jewel now eleven years old. Simon was married February 9, 1881, had one child, a boy who died while small. Simon moved to Kansas in the early 1880's and during the war with Spain he enlisted in the 21st Regiment Kansas volunteers and served until he was mustered out. Bushrod enlisted in the war of the Civil War August 18, 1862 and was discharged December 24, 1862. Was Married December 2, 1888 and has one child Lola 11 years old. He lives on the old homestead in Park County, Indiana. Mary (or Polly Shaw as she was most generally called) was born on September 18, 1814, and was married to John Howerton on October 11, 1836 and they have five children: Warren, Joseph, Henry, William and Alice. All are dead but Alice who was now Mrs. James Johnson and living in Stafford, Stafford County, Kansas. Joseph and William died in infancy. Warren and Henry lived to be grown, and in the ardor of youth when the Civil War came on, both enlisted, the former in Company F. 30th Illinois Volunteers and died at Mound City, Illinois, in February 1863. His father brought his remains home for burial in the Walnut Prairie Cemetery. Henry enlisted in Company G. 10th Illinois Infantry and served three years, his term of enlistment, came home married and lived on a farm of his own on the lower end of Walnut Prairie where he died July 1897 and left a widow and two daughters. John Howerton died before his wife and was buried with his children (Minerva, youngest child of Joseph Shaw was born on March 24, 1819, and died October 3, 1834. Alice Johnson, and died August 27, 1881 in Jewell County Kansas and was buried there.
