Director’s Notes
“Provocative” is a word that gets bandied about in artistic circles pretty frequently. And not without reason—more than anything else, the word speaks to the potential impact of a work of art, and it’s a rare artist that doesn’t hope to have an effect on his or her audience. Indifference is the one reaction no one wants.
And yet, much of our cultural activity is marked by just such indifference. As increasingly significant portions of our lives revolve around computers and televisions, art often ends up serving as background to social interactions, providing an occasion to get out and mingle. (It’s not just a problem for artists—even professional sports events are often attended by large groups of people who never even notice the score.) It’s not surprising, then, that artists sometimes choose to take a confrontational approach in order to attract attention and force an audience to respond.
But it’s a tricky thing, being “provocative.” It’s difficult to predict and impossible to control the reaction of any given audience, or of an individual within that audience. And if an individual, feeling provoked, decides to retaliate in kind, or worse, to respond in an even more provocative manner, the artist’s intention is likely to get lost in the scuffle.
Shortly before the original Deep Dish production of Via Dolorosa in February 2004, two artists created an installation for an exhibit at the Stockholm Museum of Antiquities. Entitled “Snow White,” it consisted of a sailboat floating in a pool of red fluid, its sail a portrait of a Palestinian suicide bomber. Provocative, certainly, on many fronts; the Israeli ambassador to Sweden, in fact, was sufficiently provoked to knock over a spotlight and short-circuit the entire installation.
The Stockholm Museum director Kristian Berg, descrying the ambassador’s response, said that he considered the artwork to be “an invitation to think about why such things happen in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” Our production of Via Dolorosa is intended as a similar invitation. Playwright David Hare has said that he hopes the play can “bring people as near as possible to the subject matter itself without a whole load of gratuitous, interpretative gloss from me. The only value I have is as an honest witness.”
We hope that you find Via Dolorosa provocative, but not merely in the sense of incitement—we’re trying to raise issues, not just your blood pressure. Our intention is to provoke discussion, assessment, contemplation—in short, to initiate a dialogue. While many things have changed in the years since Hare visited the Middle East, the need for dialogue is every bit as acute. Thank you, then, for joining us in this endeavor, and even more importantly, thanks for listening.
