Miscellaneous prohibited articles


  • Articles which, by reason of their shape, etc, bear a substantial resemblance to Danish or foreign coins or paper money, stamps or other national or foreign franking marks.

  • Marks or stamps similar to those used by the customs administration as duty stamps for taxation of cigarettes, etc, or which resemble these marks, as well as dies, plates and other such devices for the manufacture and reproduction of these marks (importation exclusively reserved for the customs administration).

Part II:

Conditions of admission of articles imported or in transit

2.1 Animals and animal products




2.1.1 Bees

Live bees in general are prohibited in imports. However, in special cases, the Veterinary and Food Administration authorizes the importation of queens and of the bees accompanying them.

2.1.2 Parasites and destroyers of noxious insects

Parasites and destroyers of noxious insects intended for the control of those insects may be exchanged between officially-recognized institutions only.

2.1.3 Meat and poultry

Importation of meat products and poultry is admitted only from certain countries and veterinary inspection is required. Gift parcels containing not more than 1 kg, however, will normally be admitted for private persons on condition that the contents are for personal use. Non-perishables are admitted from all countries.

2.1.4 Fish and crustacians, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates; preparations thereof

Importation of products of this kind is admitted only from certain countries and veterinary inspection is required.

2.1.5 Dairy produce, eggs, natural honey

Importation of dairy produce and all kinds of eggs, with or without shells, is admitted only from certain countries and veterinary inspection is required. Natural honey is admitted from all countries.

2.1.6 Bull's semen

Importation of bull's semen is admitted only with an import licence from the Veterinary and Food Administration.

2.1.7 Fish-meal and other fishing products used as fodder or fertilizer

Importation of the following products is prohibited: Fish-meal, herring-meal and other fishing products used as fodder or fertilizer, including dried fish, as well as any mixture composed wholly or in part of these goods (except from fish oils), crustaceans, shell-fish, echinoderms, etc, in dried state, whether ground or not, as well as any mixture composed wholly or partly of these goods. However, the Veterinary and Food Administration may permit the import of the articles in question under certain conditions.

2.1.8 Prepared animal fodder

For products of this kind veterinary inspection may be required.

2.1.9 Raw hides

Importation of raw hides, including salted and dried hides, is admitted only with an import licence from the Veterinary and Food Administration.

2.1.10 Animal and vegetable fats and oils

For animal and vegetable fats and oils, veterinary inspection or certificate of origin may be required.

2.1.11 Articles covered by CITES

Importation of articles covered by the Washington Convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora (CITES) is admitted only with a permit from the National Forest and Nature Agency.

2.2 Plants and plant products




2.2.1 Plants, parts of plants, flower bulbs and tubers

Plants, parts of plants, flower bulbs and tubers are admitted for import provided that they have been submitted to inspection on the land in which they are growing, and that they are accompanied by a plant health certificate (phytosanitary certificate) stating that inspection of the consignment being exported has also been carried out.

2.2.2 Potatoes

Importation of potatoes is not admitted without an import licence from the Plant Directorate in each instance.

2.2.3 Fruit

For the following categories of fresh fruit, a plant health certificate (phytosanitary certificate) is required: Oranges, kumquats and dwarf lemons originating in countries outside the European Union; apples, bilberries, cherimoyas, cowberries, cranberries, black currants, red currants, gooseberries, guavas, jambolans, kakis, mangos, passion fruits, pears, quinces, rose apples and stone fruits originating in countries outside Europe.

2.2.4 Maté

Maté is admitted only with a product safety certificate from the National Consumer Agency of Denmark.


2.2.5 Industrial or medicinal plants

Plants and parts thereof (including seeds and fruits) for the manufacture of perfumes, pharmaceutical products, insecticides, fungicides or the like are admitted only with a product safety certificate from the National Consumer Agency of Denmark. In some cases plant inspection is required.

2.2.6 Wood and articles of wood

For wood and articles of wood from the following trees, a plant health certificate (phytosanitary certificate) is required: Coniferous trees, plane tree and sweet chestnut originating in countries outside the European Union or, for some species, outside Europe; oak and sugar maple originating in North America; poplar originating in America. Further information is available from the Plant Directorate.

2.2.7 Cocoa preparations

For cocoa preparations in packages with a net weight of more than 2 kg, veterinary inspection may be required.

2.2.8 Pasta products filled with meat, etc, couscous, bisquits, cookies, wafers, unleavened bread

For products of this kind, veterinary inspection may be required.

2.2.9 Grape juice

For grape juice a certificate of origin may be required.

2.2.10 Miscella-neous edible preparations

For soup and bouillon, ice for consumption, concentrated protein, treacle and syrup, veterinary inspection or certificate of origin may be required.

2.2.11 Articles covered by CITES

Importation of articles covered by the Washington Convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora (CITES) is admitted only with a permit from the National Forest and Nature Agency or, for live plants, only with a permit from the Plant Directorate.

2.3 Anti-parasite products for agricultural use

Importation of products of this kind is admitted only with a permit from the National Agency of Environmental Protection.

2.4 Beverages, alcoholic fluids




2.4.1 Spirituous liquors, wines and other alcoholic beverages

Alcohol and wines may be brought in only by firms which have obtained permits from the customs service. However, alcohol and wines may be imported in small quantities for private persons without special permission. Importation in letter-post items is permitted only if the items are accompanied by the customs label CN 22 (old label C 1).

2.5 Tobacco




2.5.1 Cigarettes, cigarette papers, cigars, whiffs, smoking tobacco

Importation of cigarettes, cigarette papers, cigars, whiffs and smoking tobacco in letter-post items is permitted only if the items are accompanied by the customs label CN 22 (old label C 1).

2.6 Mineral products




2.6.1 Earth, sepiolit

For earth and sepiolit, plant inspection may be required.

2.6.2 Peat

For peat, plant inspection may be required.

2.7 Narcotics




2.7.1 Narcotics and psychotropic substances

Importation of narcotics and psychotropic substances is not permitted without an import licence from the Danish Medicines Agency (eg opium, morphine, cocaine and other narcotics subject to international control; also amphetamine, dextro-amphetamine, mescalin, methamphetamine, methyl phenidade, phenimetralin and products containing such substances).

2.8 Pharmaceutical products




2.8.1 Gland and other organs for organo-therapeutic purposes

For articles of this kind, veterinary inspection may be required.

2.8.2 Medicines and medicaments

The importation of medicines and medicaments for commercial purpose is subject to permission having been given to the import firm by the Danish Medicines Agency. It is not allowed to import medicines and medicaments for private individuals’ personal use as mail items from non-EU/EEA countries, unless an exemption has been granted by the Danish Medicines Agency.


2.9 Chemical products

Prior to the importation of chemical substances and products, the National Agency of Environmental Protection should be contacted for information about existing legislation.


2.9.1 Ammonium chloride

For ammonium chloride, a surveillance document from the Danish Agency for Trade and Industry may be required.

2.9.2 Mineral or chemical fertilizers

For products of this kind, plant inspection may be required.

2.9.3 Synthetic organic dyes, fluorescent bleaching agents

For these products, a surveillance document from the Danish Agency for Trade and Industry may be required.

2.9.4 Paints

For paints, a product safety certificate from the National Consumer Agency of Denmark may be required.

2.9.5 Plasticine

For plasticine, a product safety certificate from the National Consumer Agency of Denmark may be required.

2.9.6 Casein, albumin, gelatine and pepton

For products of this kind, veterinary inspection may be required.

2.9.7 Developers and fixing salts

For these products, an import licence from the Ministry of Justice may be required.

2.9.8 Articles containing
PCB or PCT


The sale and importation of PCB/PCT/Substitute substances are prohibited. PCB is polychlorinated biphenyl and preparations containing more than 0.005 PCB in percentage by weight. PCT is polychlorinated terphenyl and preparations containing more than 0.005 PCT in percentage by weight. Substitute substances are: monomethyl-tetrachlorodiphenylmethane, monomethyldichloro-diphenylmethane and monoethylenedibromdiphenylmethane.

Regardless of this prohibition, the importation of PCB/PCT/Substitute substances for research and test purposes is allowed. Further information is available from the National Agency of Environmental Protection.



2.9.9 Cadmium

The importation of cadmium products is prohibited. Cadmium products are products whose individual components contain cadmium as coating, colouring pigment or plastic stabiliser in a quantity exceeding 75 ppm. Certain products are not covered by the prohibition and may be imported provided that the National Agency of Environmental Protection has been notified thereof in advance. Further information is available from the National Agency of Environmental Protection.

2.10 Textiles




2.10.1 Textiles and textile articles

For importation of clothes manufactured in certain countries an import licence from the Danish Agency for Trade and Industry may be required.

2.11 Books, brochures, newspapers, printed matter




2.11.1 Picture books for children, colouring books and transfer pictures

For articles of this kind a product safety certificate from the National Consumer Agency of Denmark may be required.

2.12 Natural or cultured pearls, precious stones and metals, articles thereof, imitation jewellery




2.12.1 Jewellery, platinum, gold or silver

Importation of articles of jewellery (jewels, etc), articles made of platinum, gold or silver, in letter post-items or insured letters, is permitted only if the items are accompanied by the customs label CN 22 (old label C 1).

2.13 Base metals




2.13.1 Iron and steel and articles thereof

For importation of iron and steel and articles thereof in large quantities an import licence or a surveillance document from the Danish Agency for Trade and Industry is required.


2.14 Transport equipment




2.14.1 Bicycles

For importation of parts for bicycles a product safety certificate from the National Consumer Agency of Denmark and a surveillance document from the Danish Agency for Trade and Industry may be required.

2.14.2 Inflatable boats weighing
20 kg or less


For importation of these boats a product safety certificate from the National Consumer Agency of Denmark may be required.

2.15 Machines for games, toys




2.15.1 Toys, games and sports requisites, musical boxes

For importation of articles of this kind a product safety certificate from the National Consumer Agency of Denmark and an import licence or a surveillance document from the Danish Agency for Trade and Industry may be required.

2.15.2 Phthalates in toys

The importation of toys containing phthalates for children aged between 0 and 3 is prohibited. The limit value is 0.005 phthalates in percent by mass. Further information is available from the National Agency of Environmental Protection.
