Customized Google Maps
You can customize a map with your own markers. Here’s how:

Signing In:

  1. Go to http://maps.google.com

  1. Sign in with your Google Account and password.

Getting Ready:

  1. Click the “My Maps” link in the upper left corner.

  1. Click the “Create new map” link.



  1. Enter a title and description and choose whether you want your map to be Public or Unlisted.



Adding Markers

  1. 1Zoom in to the desired location.

  1. Click to select the placemark icon:

  1. Click the desired location on the map to set the marker.

  1. Enter a title and description and change the placemark icon, if desired. (Just click the icon and other options will become available.)

  1. Click OK. (See screenshot to right)


Saving the Map

  1. 1Repeat the previous steps to add additional markers.

  1. 2Use the provided tools to add lines and shapes, if desired.

  1. Click the Save button.


Sharing Your Map

  1. Click the “Link” button in the upper-right corner.

  1. Give the provided link to others to view your map.

  1. Use the provided HTML code to embed your map in a blog, wiki, or website.



Creating a Collaborative Map

You can allow your students, their parents, or anyone to add placemarks to your map – all at the same time!  Users must have a Google Account to edit a collaborative map.







  1. Follow the steps from last week’s tip to create and save a new map.

  1. Click the “Collaborate” link at the left side of the screen.



  1. In the pop-up window, click to “Allow anyone to edit this map.”



Sharing Your Map

  1. Click the “Link” button in the upper-right corner.

  1. Give the provided link to others to view your map.

  1. Use the provided HTML code to embed your map in a blog, wiki, or website.


Editing a Collaborative Map
Others can edit your map by doing this:

  1. Go to the provided URL.

  1. Sign in using their Google Account.

  1. Click the Edit button.



  1. Follow the steps in last week’s tip to add placemarks.

  1. Bonus - Click the “View in Google Earth” link to generate a KWL file that will open in your map (placemarke included!) in Google Earth.
