Makes Her Maiden Call to the Port of San Francisco
At 150,000 tons, QM2 is the Largest Ship to Enter the Golden Gate
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (Friday, February 2, 2007) – The City and Port of San Francisco will welcome Cunard Line’s grand ocean liner Queen Mary 2 on her maiden call on February 4-5, 2007. This will be the only U.S. West Coast port visit this year by the iconic ship, which measures 1132 feet in length – four times the height of San Francisco’s Telegraph Hill and 280 feet longer than the Transamerica Building is high.
Thousands of maritime enthusiasts and well-wishers are expected to view QM2 as she sails beneath the Golden Gate Bridge at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 4. The following morning San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and other dignitaries will greet the ship’s master, Captain Christopher Rynd, and present mementos commemorating the inaugural visit to the City by the Bay. QM2 will sail from San Francisco on Monday, February 5, at 8:00 p.m.
The ship’s arrival can be seen from several excellent viewing locations, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Point, Crissy Field, the Marina Green, Fort Mason, Aquatic Park, Pier 39, and Treasure Island.
The call at San Francisco will be the 26th day of the vessel’s Around the World in 80 Days voyage, which began in Fort Lauderdale, and will continue toward the South Seas, Australia, China, India, Egypt, and the Mediterranean.
Traffic delays on The Embarcadero are likely on Monday, February 5, as another cruise ship, Dawn Princess, also will be in port, at the Pier 35 cruise terminal. The recommended route for QM2 passengers is northbound along The Embarcadero to Pier 27; Dawn Princess passengers are advised to use Sansome Street for their approach to Pier 35.
