NOTES ON THE LIST
Limonia dilutior:- a small Crane-fly associated with Broom. It is scarce in Yorkshire, being recorded from about ten localities across the County. This is the only East Riding site (apart from an 80 years old record from Spurn).
Thereva nobilitata:- a species of coastal dunes, it has been reported from Spurn in 1919 and 1951. Inland it occurs in the East Anglian Brecklands and in North Lincs. The only previous inland Yorkshire record is for Allerthorpe in 1927.
ASILIDAE:- these are mostly flies of warm southern grasslands, and ten out of the Yorkshire total of 14 Robberfly species at one small site, is an indication of the quality of Calley Heath.
Lasiopogen cinctus (Nb) :- a species of dry sandy soils, mainly of southern heathlands, it extends as far north as S.Yorks., and S.Cumbria. It also occurs at Allerthorpe Common.
Platypalpus articulatoides (Nb):- a scarce species in Yorkshire; there is a concentration of records from the lowlands of the East Riding with seemingly no particular habitat preference.
Empis prodromus (RDB3) :- this species was first recorded for Yorkshire at Allerthorpe Common in 1989, and in the same year at North Cliffe Wood. It has been found regularly at Calley Heath since 1997 and in 2007 it was also found at North Cave Wetlands. Thus all Yorkshire records of this ‘Lower Risk’ species are from YWT reserves in lowland East Riding.
Hilara gallica (RDB2):- a single male captured at Allerthorpe in 1927 (specimen in Oxford University Museum of Natural History), remained the only known British example until specimens were found at Calley Heath in 1997. Subsequently this species has been found regularly at the site, sometimes in large numbers. Several specimens have been found on roadside trees in the vicinity of Calley Heath, and in 2006 on the west boundary of North Cliffe Wood. A single example turned up in a sample taken at a sandy location near Scunthorpe several years ago. Calley Heath is, so far as is currently known, the British headquarters for this nationally ‘Vulnerable’ species. Examples of both sexes from Calley Heath have been presented to the Natural History Museum, London, Oxford University Museum of Natural History, and the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff.
Hilara scrobulatica (Nb):- most British records are from Scotland, and a single female collected at Calley Heath in 1998 is the only Yorkshire record.
Dolichopus migrans (RDB3):- a rare species once thought to be restricted in Britain to the sandy Brecklands of East Anglia. It was reported from Risby Warren (N.Lincs) in 1988 and from Calley Heath in 1998 where it is well-established, being found in large numbers from 2007 onwards.

Medetera micacea:- a scarce species for which there are only six widely scattered Yorkshire records. In East Yorkshire it has been reported from Thixendale and Water Dale as well as Calley Heath.
Sciapus contristans:- in Yorkshire this species is known from only three other widely scattered localities in addition to Calley Heath. The only other East Riding record is from Allerthorpe in 1925.
