A study visit by David Ruthven.
Birds: Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella, Green Woodpecker Picus viridis, Jay Garrulus glandarius, Heron Ardea cinerea, Goldfinch Carduelis carduelis, Greenfinch C. chloris - 2 seen, Meadow Pipit Anthus pratensis - 2 seen, Wren Troglodytes troglodytes.
Mammals: Roe Deer Capreolus capreolus - 1 seen.
Butterflies: Red Admiral Vanessa atalanta, Speckled Wood Pararge aegeria, Silver-studded Blue Plebejus argus - 36 males, 4 females, 3 pairs mating (on Buxton Heath itself) + 22 males, 5 females, 6 pairs mating (on the ride, Great Wood side), Peacock Inachis io, Small Tortoiseshell Aglais urticae, Ringlet Aphantopus hyperantus, Meadow Brown Maniola jurtina, Large Skipper Ochlodes venatus - several.
Moths: Lead Belle Scotopteryx mucronata, Common Heath Ematurga atomaria, Brown Silver-line Petrophora chlorosata.
Odonata: Broad-bodied Chaser Libellula depressa - 2 seen.
Hymenoptera: Hornet Vespa crabro.
Herptiles: Common Lizard Lacerta vivipara.
In flower: Brooklime Veronica beccabunga, Tormentil Potentilla erecta, Ragged Robin Lychnis flos-cuculi, Marsh Lousewort Pedicularis palustris, Common Centaury Centaurium erythraea, Brookweed Samolus valerandi, Bog Pimpernel Anagallis tenella, Common Milkwort Polygala vulgaris, Tufted Vetch Viccia cracca, Greater Bird's-foot Trefoil Lotus uliginosus, Marsh & Spotted Orchid hybrids Dactylorhiza sp., Marsh Helleborine Epipactis palustris, Fragrant Orchid Gymnadenia conopsea - 4 seen, Round-leaved Sundew Drosera rotundifolia, Hemp Agrimony Euptatorium cannabinum, Square-stemmed St John's-wort Hypericum tetrapterum.

Mammals: Roe Deer Capreolus capreolus - heard barking.
Butterflies: Silver-studded Blue Plebejus argus - good numbers, 4 pairings noted, Large Skipper Ochlodes venatus - several, Ringlet Aphantopus hyperantus, Meadow Brown Maniola jurtina - several, Speckled Wood Pararge aegeria - a few worn specimens, Large White Pieris brassicae - 3 seen, Green-veined White Artogeia napi, Painted Lady Cynthia cardui, Red Admiral Vanessa atalanta - 3 seen, Comma Polygonia c-album, Brimstone Gonepteryx rhamni - 1 large larva on Alder Buckthorn, plus evidence that others had been feeding elsewhere on the bush.
Moths: Hummingbird Hawkmoth Macroglossum stellatarum - a male feeding on Honeysuckle blossom, Broad-bordered Bee Hawkmoth Hemaris fuciformis - a few small larvae found, Lead Belle Scotopteryx mucronata, 5-spot Burnet Zygaena trifolii, Straw Dot Rivula sericealis - several, Marbled White Spot Lithacodia pygarga - single-brooded, flying late May to mid-July, inhabiting woodlands, heaths, commons. Larvae are found on Purple Moor-grass.
Hymenoptera: Common Wasp Vespula vulgaris - 10 seen, Hornet Vespa crabro - 1 seen - (both species drinking sap from a wounded tree.
Odonata: Large Red Damselfly Pyrrhosoma nymphula - 3 seen, Four-spotted Chaser Libellula quadrimaculata - 2 seen.
Herptiles: Common Lizard Lacerta vivipara - 5 seen.
In flower: Hemp Agrimony Eupatorium cannabinum, Fragrant Orchid Gymnadenia conopsea - several, Marsh Helleborine Epipactis palustris, Common Dodder Cuscuta epithymum.
