Memorandum of Understanding

Between the Planetary Data System

and the

Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Project

PURPOSE

This MOU establishes:

  1. responsibilities of the Planetary Data System (PDS) and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) Project, and

  2. a formal interface agreement between the two organizations in regards to the archive and distribution process.

SCOPE

This MOU governs the period of pre-Launch planning through the final receipt and archive of data following End of Mission. Reference to the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Project is assumed to include its Principal Investigators and Facility Teams. This agreement is based on currently planned budgets and requirements documentation. There is no exchange of funds between the MRO Project and PDS.
PDS and MRO will:

  • document activities and responsibilities related to generation, distribution and archive of MRO data in an MRO Data Archive Generation, Validation, and Transfer Plan (AGVTP)

  • document agreements between data suppliers and the relevant PDS nodes via Interface Control Documents

  • participate in a joint PDS/MRO Data and Archive Working Group (DARWG), a sub-group of the Project Science Group, to oversee archive planning, data product review, and timely resolution of issues

PDS will:

  • support development of the MRO archive system by providing guidelines and data engineering advice and review

  • provide a system via its distributed sites for electronic receipt and distribution of validated MRO data

  • provide on-line forms-based retrieval mechanism allowing users to search and access MRO data on various criteria

  • provide access to MRO data as soon as possible after time of delivery based on a time scale negotiated with the Project

  • provide on-demand hard copy media to science subscribers

  • transfer final archive products to the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC)

MRO will:

  • provide validated PDS-compliant standard and reduced data products and other products defined in the AGVTP to the PDS

  • provide to the PDS documentation adequate to describe data products, including standard/software interface agreements (SIS’s) and calibration information

  • deliver products either electronically or on hard copy digital media on an agreed-upon schedule documented in the AGVTP.

  • provide final products to the PDS on hard copy digital media (three copies)
